The Origin of Father’s Day
As families across the nation celebrate Father’s Day with barbecues and heartfelt gifts, it's timely to reflect on the holiday's humble beginnings, rooted deeply in both love and loss. The concept of Father's Day was conceived by Sonora Smart Dodd in 1910, in Spokane, Washington. Inspired by the celebration of Mother’s Day, Dodd, who was raised by her widowed father along with her siblings, felt the need to honor fathers like hers who were both nurturing and resilient.
Dodd's father, William Jackson Smart, was a Civil War veteran who single-handedly raised six children. To recognize his selflessness and that of other fathers, Dodd proposed the idea of Father's Day to local churches, the YMCA, and shopkeepers, gaining their support for the first celebration on June 19, 1910. Originally marked by wearing roses—red for the living fathers and white for the deceased—the day slowly gained traction.
However, unlike Mother’s Day, which was quickly recognized as a national holiday by President Woodrow Wilson in 1914, Father's Day did not enjoy the same immediate acceptance. It wasn’t until 1972, under President Richard Nixon, that Father’s Day was officially declared a national holiday, finally establishing the third Sunday of June as a day of appreciation for fathers and father figures nationwide.
As we mark over a century since its inception, Father’s Day remains a poignant reminder of the significant role fathers play in their children's lives, deserving of recognition and celebration.

Former Holly Hill Police Chief Accused of Sexual Misconduct in Internal Probe

An internal affairs investigation has unveiled serious allegations of sexual misconduct against former Holly Hill Police Chief Jeff Miller. The report, released on Friday, accuses Miller of exposing himself and soliciting sex acts from a rookie female officer, as well as boasting about sexual encounters with suspects, victims, and witnesses. Miller resigned on March 15 amid the investigation, which also led to the resignations of Police Capt. Chris Yates and Sgt. Shannon Fountain. The incidents allegedly occurred in 2008 when Miller was an investigator. The rookie officer reported feeling coerced by Miller’s status within the department. Miller admitted to some inappropriate behavior during an FDLE interview but denied the most serious allegations. The investigation has highlighted a troubling culture of misconduct within the Holly Hill Police Department. (Daytona News-Journal)
NASA and Boeing Extend ISS Mission for Starliner Testing
NASA and Boeing have extended the ISS mission of the Starliner crew to conduct critical tests and finalize departure planning. Officials will discuss the updated return schedule and weather considerations during a media teleconference on June 18. Steve Stich, manager of NASA's Commercial Crew Program, noted the importance of this extension for understanding Starliner's capabilities. The crew, NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, have been performing various tasks since their arrival on June 6. Planned tests include a "hot fire test" of the spacecraft's aft-facing thrusters and monitoring cabin air temperatures. Mark Nappi of Boeing emphasized the unique opportunity to gather invaluable data during the extended stay. Both NASA and Boeing teams are confident in their ability to optimize the mission's potential. (WESH2.com)
