Local Mother and Son Volunteer to Give Back After Life-Saving Diagnosis

Courtesy Photo

Jill and Ethan Piazza joined 500 AdventHealth volunteers in providing nearly 1,800 free sports physicals for students in Volusia and Flagler counties. Jill had previously taken her son Ethan to a screening where he was diagnosed with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, a congenital heart condition. Following treatment, Ethan resumed his normal activities and joined his mother in volunteering.

This year’s screenings identified nearly 50 students for follow-up cardiac care, with five needing immediate attention. Erik Nason from AdventHealth highlighted the life-saving importance of these screenings, which have a significant impact on community health by enabling early detection and intervention. New Legislation Requires Training, Transparency for Florida Condo Directors

Governor Ron DeSantis has signed HB 1021, a new law aimed at tightening oversight of Florida condominium boards. The legislation, dubbed "Condo 3.0" by sponsor Rep. Vicki Lopez, introduces mandatory training for directors, criminal penalties for record-keeping violations and kickbacks, public posting of building records, and restrictions on using association funds for defamation lawsuits. Dubbed “Condo 3,.0” it builds on legislation enacted after the tragic 2021 collapse of the Champlain Towers South in Surfside.

It also enhances the enforcement capabilities of the Department of Business and Professional Regulation. This follows the 2022 law SB 4-D, which requires older condo developments to undergo inspections and build reserve funds by the end of this year. (Daytona News-Journal) $

Volusia Ranked Top Florida County at Risk for Flooding

Volusia and St. Johns counties in Florida have been ranked among the top ten U.S. counties at risk for flooding by LawnStarter. Volusia was rated the highest risk in Florida and seventh nationally, while St. Johns ranked ninth. Despite their high overall flood risk, both counties are noted for their preparedness, ranking in the top 15 nationally. Recent severe flooding in southern Florida highlights the state’s vulnerability, prompting major insurance companies to withdraw. Climate scientists attribute the increasing severity of hurricanes to global warming, with NASA and NOAA confirming these trends. (NewsDaytonaBeach.com)

New Research Highlights Beet Juice Benefits for Postmenopausal Women

Frequent consumption of beet juice may significantly enhance heart health among postmenopausal women, according to recent findings. The potential benefits of beet juice stem from its ability to improve blood vessel function, which is primarily attributed to the increase in nitric oxide levels within the body. Nitric oxide is known to play a crucial role in vasodilation, helping blood vessels relax and improve blood flow.

Sources indicate that postmenopausal women, who are at a higher risk for cardiovascular issues, could particularly benefit from the regular intake of beet juice. This natural dietary intervention could serve as a complementary approach to conventional heart health strategies. The findings suggest that incorporating beet juice into a balanced diet might offer a simple yet effective means of promoting cardiovascular wellness in this demographic. (Healthline)
