Ormond Beach native Marin Houck, a former Miss Seabreeze and lifelong surfer, has become the new face of Ron Jon Surf Shop. Houck, who began surfing at age five, grew up admiring the brand and its team riders. At 17, she attended a Ron Jon casting call, leading to a photoshoot that blended her passions for surfing and skateboarding. Houck's journey from measuring her height against Ron Jon surfboards to becoming their model exemplifies a local success story. (Ormond Observer)

Falcon Heavy Lifts Off with GOES-U, A New Era in Weather Monitoring

Photo: NASA

NOAA's final GOES-R series satellite, GOES-U, was successfully launched from Florida's Space Coast by a Falcon Heavy rocket. This advanced weather satellite features cutting-edge technology, including the Advanced Baseline Imager and Compact Coronagraph, set to revolutionize weather monitoring and forecasting. The satellite will reduce geomagnetic storm detection time from eight hours to 30 minutes and capture previously unseen details of Earth's weather events. This improved resolution will provide meteorologists with a more comprehensive understanding of storm systems and atmospheric conditions. The launch marks a significant advancement in severe weather monitoring and prediction capabilities, potentially enhancing public safety through more accurate and timely warnings. (WESH.com)

Record-Breaking Dengue Cases Prompt CDC Warning to Healthcare Providers

U.S. health officials have issued a warning about the rising cases of dengue fever, a mosquito-borne disease exacerbated by climate change. The CDC has alerted doctors to be vigilant for symptoms, especially in travelers returning from affected areas. While dengue remains less common in the continental U.S., cases have tripled compared to last year. Puerto Rico faces a unique challenge with new dengue types emerging after years of exposure to type 1. Vaccine development has been complicated by the need to protect against all four dengue types. Globally, dengue cases have surged, with countries in the Americas breaking annual records in just six months. The disease's expansion is linked to the increasing range of warm-weather mosquitoes due to climate change. Health officials stress the importance of awareness and proper testing to address this growing international concern. (WESH.com)
