Enhancing Child Safety - Free Door and Pool Alarms Available in Volusia County

Volusia County is enhancing water safety for households with children by distributing free door and pool-motion alarms. Starting at 9 a.m. on June 28, county officials will give away alarms at six county libraries on a first-come, first-serve basis. The alarms include a four-pack of window and door alarms that sound when a door or window opens, and pool alarms that activate with water surface disturbances. Each household can receive one set of each alarm type. Distribution sites include Ormond Beach Regional Library, Daytona Beach Regional Library and Port Orange Regional Library. No appointments or reservations are needed. This initiative, launched by the Volusia County council on May 21, aims to prevent accidental drownings. The council also funded free or reduced-rate swim lessons through the Volusia Flagler Family YMCA and the Daytona Beach Parks and Recreation Department for income-eligible families. (MyNews13.com)

Holly Hill Council Meeting Heated Over Alleged Police Misconduct

Tensions flared at the Holly Hill City Council meeting following the release of a report detailing sexual misconduct within the police department. The Volusia County Sheriff's Office investigation implicated several high-ranking officers, leading to public outcry. Residents demanded accountability and reforms, questioning the council's ability to ensure transparency. Despite the appointment of Byron Williams as the new police chief, many felt this was insufficient to restore trust. Calls for City Manager Joseph Forte's resignation underscored the demand for significant change. The report, based on interviews with current and former employees, revealed a troubling departmental culture. Residents expressed support for the alleged victims and urged the council to take decisive action. A meet-and-greet with Chief Williams is scheduled for Thursday at 6 p.m. at city hall.  (Fox35.com)
