Ormond Beach's Young Beauty Queen Leads School Supply Drive for Foster Children
Gianna Capri partners with Embry-Riddle - Courtesy photo
Gianna Capri, the 10-year-old Florida International United Miss Jr. Preteen 2024 from Ormond Beach, has partnered with Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s Volunteer Network for her third annual backpack drive to benefit foster children at Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health. Gianna, who began this initiative in 2022, joined forces with Embry-Riddle student Sophia Mazzuchelli to further this cause.
The Volunteer Network supports various community causes, focusing on individuals with disabilities and young people's academic achievements. Michael’s ‘Ohana, an organization aiding the special needs community, also backs the drive. The Volunteer Network has organized donation events and will continue collecting contributions throughout the summer, aiming to raise $2,000. Gianna hopes to inspire young girls to make a difference, encouraging respect and empathy among students. (Ormond Observer)
Daytona Beach Freedom Festival Honors Late Veteran John Brinkley
Daytona Beach held its fourth annual Freedom Festival at Manatee Island, honoring local veterans ahead of the Fourth of July. The event began with a Veterans Ceremony by the Military Order of the Purple Heart, recognizing John Brinkley, a World War II and Korean War veteran who founded the Daytona Beach Veterans Museum. Brinkley, who passed away in August 2022, was posthumously honored by Mayor Derrick Henry, and his contributions were praised by Volusia Sheriff Mike Chitwood. The festival, created by Commissioner Stacy Cantu, featured vendors, live music, games, and free food for veterans, celebrating their ongoing legacy and sacrifices. (MyNews13.com)
Supreme Court Upholds Florida's Ban on Homeless Sleeping in Public Spaces
The U.S. Supreme Court has upheld Florida's strict measures against homelessness, allowing cities to ban homeless people from sleeping in public spaces. The decision supports Florida’s House Bill 1365, which will take effect on October 1, and mandates that homeless individuals sleep in designated camps rather than public areas.
Critics, including Eric Gray of the Christian Service Center for Central Florida, argue that criminalizing homelessness exacerbates the issue, pointing to the lack of affordable housing as a core problem. The ruling, determined by a 6-3 conservative majority, is seen as a way to regulate public spaces, though advocates highlight the adverse impact on the homeless population. (WESH.com)
