Marine Discovery Center’s Shuck & Share Recycles Over One Million Pounds of Oyster Shells

The Marine Discovery Center’s Shuck & Share program has recycled over one million pounds of oyster shells since 2013, repurposing them for habitat restoration in the Indian River Lagoon.

Participating restaurants in Volusia County including 63 Sovereign and Riptides Raw Bar & Grill in Ormond Beach save oyster shells, which are then quarantined, attached to biodegradable mats by volunteers, and placed in the lagoon to restore oyster reefs. The program not only stabilizes shorelines and supports biodiversity but also filters significant amounts of water.

The initiative is supported by various organizations and aims to create sustainable habitats for future generations. Visit the Marine Discovery Center’s website for more information. (See Full Story at MyNews13.com)

Man Charged After Dropping Child from Daytona Beach Hotel Balcony

A Volusia County man, Brandon Gilmore, 31, is in jail without bail after allegedly dropping a child from a second-floor balcony at the Sandals Inn in Daytona Beach. The child, who was hospitalized but is not expected to have long-term medical issues, was discharged on Monday. Gilmore, charged with aggravated child abuse, met the child and his mother only five hours before the incident. Witnesses and video footage showed Gilmore dangling the child by his legs before dropping him. The Department of Children and Families has been notified of the case. Semaglutide in Ozempic and Wegovy Linked to Rare Blinding Disease

Recent research has associated semaglutide, the active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy, with a rare condition called non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION), which can cause sudden blindness due to inadequate blood flow to the optic nerve. The study, published in JAMA Ophthalmology, suggests that patients with type 2 diabetes and obesity who take semaglutide may have an increased risk of developing NAION compared to those using non-GLP-1 drugs. However, experts emphasize that the findings are preliminary and do not establish a causal link. Dr. Yin Allison Liu of UC Davis and Dr. Nicholas J. Volpe of Northwestern University underscore the importance of awareness without causing undue alarm. With the popularity of semaglutide, it is crucial for both doctors and patients to stay informed about this potential risk. (See Full Story at Healthline.com)
