Ormond/Daytona Sizzle: No Relief in Sight for Record-Breaking Heat

Like much of the country, Central Florida is grappling with a persistent heatwave, with Volusia and Flagler counties experiencing oppressive and record-setting temperatures. The National Weather Service predicts no immediate relief, with heat index values expected to range from 100 to 110 degrees Fahrenheit through the weekend.
June temperatures in Daytona Beach averaged 2.5 degrees above normal, making it the second warmest June on record since 1923. This trend is consistent across east Central Florida. Accompanying the heat, the region has seen drier than normal conditions, with Daytona Beach receiving 42% less rainfall than average in June. Despite lower rainfall, both counties remain within the normal range on the drought index. The lack of afternoon thunderstorms is contributing to the intensified heat. Residents are urged to take precautions against heat-related illnesses. (See Full Story at Daytona News-Journal) $

Nine Students Join Local Manufacturing Firms Through Florida FAME Program

The Florida FAME Sunshine Chapter celebrated the successful placement of its fourth cohort of students into local manufacturing firms on Tuesday, July 9. Nine students signed with eight sponsoring companies, including Ormond Beach's ABB Installation Products and Germfree, to receive two years of on-the-job training through the FAME program. The program, the only one of its kind in Florida, allows students to earn an associate's degree in engineering technology while gaining practical experience.

Victor Nadeau from Thompson Pump emphasized the program's success in meeting the talent needs of local manufacturers. T'Seanna Owens, one of the participants, highlighted the benefits of hands-on learning and financial support. Daytona State College President Thomas LoBasso praised the collaboration between the college, local manufacturers, and the Volusia Manufacturing Association for creating a skilled workforce pipeline. Emilie Schmitz from Germfree noted the program's 100% placement rate and shared success stories of past graduates. (See Full Story at Ormond Observer) $
