Top Junior Lifeguards Compete in Daytona Beach This Weekend

The 2024 Statewide Junior Lifeguard Competition Championships will be held Saturday in Volusia County, featuring top young lifeguards from across Florida. The event, located behind the Hard Rock Hotel in Daytona Beach, runs from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Interim Beach Safety Director Tammy Malphurs highlighted its significance in showcasing the future of beach safety. Junior lifeguards in three age divisions (9-10, 11-12, and 13-15) will compete in events such as boarding, swimming, paddling, and rescuing. AdventHealth Daytona Beach Competes for Most Beautiful Hospital Award

AdventHealth’s Daytona Beach campus is competing for Soliant’s “Most Beautiful Hospital Award,” which honors hospitals fostering holistic and healing environments. The competition, hosted by national health-care staffing firm Soliant, is in its final voting stage, with AdventHealth Daytona among 100 hospitals aiming for a top 20 spot. Soliant, known for placing health-care professionals across various specialties, noted that hospital beauty includes both aesthetic design and the compassionate connections formed by staff. The contest highlights hospitals with unique designs, landscapes, and supportive staff. AdventHealth Daytona, praised for its greenery and sunshine-filled environment, recently opened a new 60,000-square-foot medical office building and ambulatory surgery center. Jackie Robinson Ballpark Could Become National Commemorative Site

Legislation introduced by U.S. Rep. Mike Waltz seeks to designate Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona Beach as a National Commemorative Site. The ballpark, where Robinson broke racial barriers in 1946, may also gain National Historic Landmark status. The Phone Scams Continue - Scammer Arrested After Targeting Elderly Woman’s Life Savings in Gold Scheme

A scammer was arrested after convincing a 74-year-old Marion County woman to liquidate her life savings into gold, according to Ocala police. The scammers posed as a call center, claiming she had a computer virus and needed to convert her savings into gold, which was sold and shipped. Police alerted the woman to the scam when the gold was delivered.

Later, the scammers told her to expect a courier. Police spotted a suspicious van in her neighborhood and found 42-year-old man, who was on a live call using GPS to her home. He was charged with organized fraud.

  • Emily C. Goodrich, 25: Possession of controlled substance, paraphernalia; driving with canceled license. Bail $3,500.

  • Chad R. Goodwin, 32: Driving with canceled license, leaving crash scene with injury. Bail $10,500.

  • Bryan S. Mejia Rodriguez, 26: Possession of Schedule II substance, paraphernalia; prowling. Bail $7,500.

  • Christopher L. Shannon, 53: Conspiracy to traffick cocaine, unlawful use of communication device. Bail $2,500.

  • Clayton A. Cornett, 18: Robbery by sudden snatching. No bail set.

  • Patricia A. Blanton, 33: Possession of Schedule II substance, paraphernalia. No bail set.

  • Hannah E. Curtis, 21: Possession of controlled substance, paraphernalia. Bail $5,500.
