Volusia County Libraries Serve as Cooling Stations Amid Heat Wave

Volusia County has designated its 14 public libraries as cooling stations amid extreme heat, offering refuge to residents without air conditioning. This move is particularly important for vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and those with disabilities or chronic illnesses. With heat indices regularly exceeding 100 degrees, county officials stress the importance of utilizing these facilities, where bottled water is available upon request. Libraries such as the Daytona Beach Regional Library and the Ormond Beach Regional Library are open with varying hours throughout the week to accommodate those seeking relief from the heat.

  • Ormond Beach Regional Library, 30 S. Beach St., Ormond Beach

    • Hours: Noon to 5 p.m. Sunday; 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday

Big Lots Announces Store Closures in Response to Tough Market Conditions

Big Lots announced plans to close 35 to 40 stores this year due to financial struggles in a tough consumer market, while also planning to open three new stores. The retailer has not disclosed which locations will be closed. This move follows a broader trend of store closures and bankruptcies among major retailers, including Red Lobster, Rite Aid, Bed Bath & Beyond, and Christmas Tree Shops, with companies like Hooters, Walgreens, Sears, Kmart, J.C. Penney, and Disney Stores also shuttering underperforming locations since 2020. ( See Full Story at Daytona News-Journal) $
