Kipton Brown, a 14-year-old Ormond Beach Police Explorer, made history last month by becoming the first from his city to graduate from the Central Florida Law Enforcement Explorer Academy. Hosted by the Seminole County Sheriff's Office Police Athletic League, the academy provided a rigorous schedule of physical training, drills, and classwork from June 3-14. Despite early mornings and long days, Kipton excelled, joining 36 other cadets in graduating. Having joined the Police Explorers in January, Kipton's interest in law enforcement is influenced by his grandfather's career. His dedication and ambition have impressed his mentors, who predict a leadership role for him. Kipton's participation has positively impacted his peers, enhancing the program's discipline. Next school year, he will attend Seabreeze High School's Cambridge AICE program and continue with the Halifax Rowing Association. (See Full Story at Ormond Observer) $

Balloon Release Ban Enforced in Florida to Safeguard Sea Turtles and Marine Life

Florida has introduced a statewide ban on balloon releases, effective July 1, to protect marine life, particularly sea turtles. The new law prohibits the intentional release of all balloons, including biodegradable ones, expanding on previous restrictions. Alyssa Hancock from the Marine Science Center highlighted the dangers balloons pose to marine animals, often mistaking them for food, leading to fatal blockages. The center treats numerous turtles each year, aiming to rehabilitate and return them to the ocean. Environmentally friendly alternatives to balloon releases, such as candlelight vigils and planting native plants, are encouraged. Violators face a $150 fine, with exemptions for children under seven. Citizens Insurance Secures Finances for Active Storm Season; Policyholders to See Rate Increase in 2025

Citizens Property Insurance Corp. assures its financial readiness for an exceptionally active hurricane season, capable of handling storms triple the size of 2022's Hurricane Ian. A recent report confirms that Citizens’ reserves are sufficient to prevent a surcharge on all Florida insurance policies. However, policyholders will face a 14% increase in premiums in 2025 if state regulators approve. Despite market concerns due to a busy forecast, Citizens’ investment income and reduced reinsurance costs reflect solid financial health. Officials express confidence that only an extremely rare storm would impact reserves enough to trigger additional charges. (See Full Story at Daytona News-Journal) $

Creamy Chicken And Asparagus Bake

Photo: Allrecipes.com

This crowd-pleasing dish features golden-seared chicken and crisp-tender asparagus cooked together for a delightful combination of flavors and textures.

Begin by searing the chicken and setting it aside. Then, in the same pan, combine shallot, wine, thyme sprigs, and broth. Add the asparagus and return the seared chicken to the pan. Since this dish moves from stovetop to oven, ensure you're using an oven-safe skillet.

The result is a creamy, nourishing meal with peppery, fresh notes and a hint of tanginess from the creme fraiche. Serve alongside rice, pasta, or potatoes for a complete meal.

Feel free to experiment with different cheeses or herbs to suit your taste. Asparagus pairs well with seasonings like cayenne, dill, garlic, thyme, parsley, sage, and tarragon – many of which also complement chicken nicely.

The recipe calls for grated Parmesan, but other hard cheeses like Pecorino, Manchego, or Asiago can be substituted. If you don't have white wine on hand, white wine vinegar can provide a similar effect.

Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days.
