Reflecting on Political Violence and Our Democratic Future
While we usually steer away from politics on the "Pulse", we cannot today, ignore Saturday's events.
The attempted assassination of former President Trump marks a critical juncture in our nation's history. This shocking event serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of our republic and the potential consequences of extreme political polarization.
We are old enough to remember the tragic assassinations of John F. Kennedy and his brother Robert, as well as the attempted assassinations of President's Reagan and Ford, presidential candidate George Wallace, and the foiled plot against President George W. Bush. And, of course, while not a political figure, Martin Luther King, Jr.. Each of these events sent shockwaves through the nation, leaving indelible marks on our collective consciousness.
In this overheated and deeply divided campaign season, it's crucial that we, as a nation, take a step back and reflect on the dangerous path which we're treading. The vitriolic rhetoric emanating from both sides of the political spectrum needs to be toned down. Such inflammatory language not only deepens the divide between Americans, but also provides fodder for mentally unstable individuals to take radical, violent action like we witnessed yesterday.
It is incumbent upon all of us - candidates, media, and citizens alike — to contribute to de-escalation efforts. This means minimizing the display of inciteful flags and signs, rejecting the un-hinged personal attacks, and instead focusing on the substantive issues at hand. We MUST engage in respectful dialogue, even with those whose views differ from our own.
As we approach the upcoming election, it's essential to look beyond individual personalities and consider what each political party stands for. This race presents a unique scenario: two candidates, a president and former president, who can point to the achievements of their respective administrations. This allows voters to make a clear, thoughtful comparison and decide which vision they prefer for America's future.
We must remember that our republic thrives on the peaceful transition of power and respectful political conversation. By focusing on policy differences rather than personal attacks, we can elevate the level of political debate and make more informed decisions at the ballot box.
In summary, Saturday's attempted assassination serves as a national wake-up call. It's time to reject violence and extremism in all its forms and recommit ourselves to the principles of civil discourse and democratic engagement. Our nation's future depends on our ability to bridge divides, find common ground, and work together towards a more united and prosperous America. - Editor
Families Turn to Volusia Online Learning for Flexibility and Structure
Last Call..Applications Due Today!!!
As Volusia County prepares for the 2024-2025 school year, families are considering Volusia Online Learning (VOL) as an alternative to traditional in-person classes. This program offers full-time and part-time options for students from kindergarten through 12th grade. Seventh grader Ella Clifton, enrolled since fifth grade, values the flexibility VOL provides, allowing her to practice guitar daily. Her mother, Kimberly Clifton, chose VOL for its flexibility and structure, beneficial given her full-time job that requires travel.
VOL has grown significantly, particularly during the pandemic, and now serves about 500 full-time and nearly 4,000 part-time students. Principal Tony Serianni emphasizes the need for self-discipline and a good academic history for success in VOL. The application period for the 2024-2025 school year ends on July 15. Families can apply online or through their school counselor to see if they meet the criteria. Interest in the program remains high, with over 500 applications expected. Volusia County Offers Online Ballot Tracking for Mail-In Voters
Volusia County voters now have a convenient way to ensure their mail-in ballots are received and counted. The Volusia County Supervisor of Elections office has implemented an online tracking system that allows voters to monitor the status of their mail-in ballots from the comfort of their homes.
To use this service, voters can visit the Volusia County Supervisor of Elections website and navigate to the "Ballottrax" section. There, they'll need to enter their first and last name along with their date of birth to access their ballot information.
The tracking system provides real-time updates on when the ballot was mailed out, received by the elections office, and whether it has been counted. This transparency helps alleviate concerns about lost or delayed ballots and ensures voters can take action if any issues arise.
Election officials encourage all mail-in voters to take advantage of this free service, emphasizing that it promotes confidence in the voting process and helps maintain the integrity of elections in Volusia County.
Voters with questions about the ballot tracking system or any other election-related matters can contact the Volusia County Supervisor of Elections office directly for assistance online or at 386-736-5930
