Volusia County to Charge Beach Visitors for Off-Beach Parking Starting 2025
Starting January 2025, Volusia County will charge visitors for parking in `off-beach lots, with fees set at $20 for a day pass and $100 for an annual pass. The county council has awarded a $1.5 million contract to PCI Municipal Services, LLC, to manage the five-year program, expected to generate $6 million annually. Residents, property owners, and college students will park for free by registering their vehicles. The ordinance, effective October 1, 2024, will enforce payments from January 1, 2025, with fines of $50, increasing to $100 for non-payment within 14 days. Payment options include an app, text-to-pay, NFT payments, and kiosks. The program aims to cover beach maintenance costs through visitor fees, relieving residents of additional financial burden. Councilman Troy Kent and Chair Jeff Brower advocate for eliminating beach tolls for residents, emphasizing that existing taxes already fund beach upkeep. (See Full Story at Ormond Observer)$
Army Corps Seeks Daytona Beach Input on Flood Management Study
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers held two meetings on Tuesday to seek feedback from Daytona Beach residents about flooding in the Midtown area. Part of the Flood Risk Management Feasibility Study, these sessions focus on a region prone to severe flooding, notably during Hurricane Ian in 2022. The study covers an area from Beville Road to Orange Avenue and Nova Road to Ridgewood Avenue, housing over 8,000 people. Residents like Navy veteran Bob Glass recounted significant flood damage to their homes. Project manager Jim LaGrone stated the study aims to propose economically and environmentally feasible flood mitigation strategies, with a final report expected by January 2027. The Corps is also launching a public website for community updates. Long-time resident Bill Leszewski, who has taken extensive measures to flood-proof his home, expressed hope for solutions to alleviate the ongoing storm anxiety among his neighbors. Ormond Beach Former Assisted Living Facility Eyed for Hotel Conversion
A former assisted living facility at 1050 Ocean Shore Blvd., Ormond Beach, is being considered for redevelopment into a hotel with 45-50 rooms. Property owner Jay Patel discussed the plan with the Ormond Beach Site Plan Review Committee (SPRC) on July 10. The facility, previously Seaside Manor, closed in 2023 after license renewal denial. Rezoning is required for the property, currently zoned B-1 "Professional/Office." Patel plans to improve the building's curb appeal, landscaping, and parking. City officials suggested a neighborhood meeting to address local concerns about increased traffic, particularly from Plaza Drive residents. The SPRC meets weekly and is open to the public.
