Ormond Beach’s MLK Committee Announces Free Backpack Giveaway Event

On August 3, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the South Ormond Neighborhood Center will host the Carrying Hope Back 2 School event, organized by Ormond Beach’s Martin Luther King Jr. Committee. The event will distribute 400 free backpacks and include educational sessions, games, and food from Gordon Food Service. Tina Carlyle, the MLK committee chair, proposed the event to boost community outreach, partnering with Njeria Bell, who previously organized her own backpack giveaways during the pandemic. AdventHealth Daytona Beach Launches $220 Million Expansion Project

AdventHealth Daytona Beach has launched a $220 million expansion project to enhance its facilities. The development will add 104 inpatient beds, four new operating rooms, and 240,000 square feet to the hospital. The expansion involves vertical extensions to two existing towers, increasing the hospital’s total capacity to 466 beds and 22 surgical suites. It will also expand support services, including a larger sterile processing department, new pharmacy, expanded laboratory, and additional imaging equipment. Construction began in June and follows the recent opening of a $45.7 million surgical center. The project is expected to be completed by fall 2026. (See Full Story at Ormond Observer) $

Florida grocery stores might soon feature vending machines dispensing ammunition, thanks to American Rounds. These advanced machines, already in use in states like Texas and Colorado, include security features such as ID scanning and facial recognition to ensure buyers are over 21. Built with double steel walls, they aim to offer a secure and efficient way for consumers to purchase ammunition. Growing interest from Florida retailers suggests the state could soon join the trend. American Rounds reports a surge in demand, with 200 additional units on order, reflecting a shift toward convenient ammo retail.

Fruit Salad Cheesecake

Ingredients:

For the Crust:

  • 1 1/2 cups vanilla wafer crumbs

  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted

For the Filling:

  • 1 (20 oz.) can crushed pineapple, drained

  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar

  • 1/2 cup cold water

  • 2 envelopes unflavored gelatin

  • 1 (8 oz.) package cream cheese, cubed

  • 1 1/2 cups halved seedless grapes

  • 1 (11 oz.) can mandarin oranges, drained and cut in half

  • 1 (10 oz.) jar maraschino cherries, drained and roughly chopped

  • 1/2 cup finely chopped pecans

  • 2 cups whipped topping

Directions:

  • Prepare the Crust : Mix crumbs and melted butter. Press into the bottom of a 9-inch springform pan. Set aside.

  • Make the Filling: Cook pineapple with sugar. Dissolve gelatin in cold water, add to pineapple, reduce heat, add cream cheese until smooth. Cool, then add fruits and nuts. Fold in whipped topping.

  • Assemble: Pour filling over crust, chill overnight.

  • Serve: Remove from pan, slice, and serve chilled.

  • Prep Time: 30 minutes

Welcome Uncommon Grain!

Uncommon Grain, a new bakery and café, has opened at 11 W. Granada Blvd. in downtown Ormond Beach. The bakery will offer a variety of fresh breads, pastries, artisan sandwiches, and eventually smoothies. Founded by Sergio Faenza and Brandon Sheppard, who also own nearby restaurant 63 Sovereign, Uncommon Grain aims to enhance local food options and revitalize a space that has been vacant since Cakery Creations closed. The bakery’s design features an open, light-filled atmosphere and includes a mural depicting historic downtown scenes from the early 1900s.

Operating hours will be from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Saturday, with Sundays off. Faenza and Sheppard hope to provide unique breads and ethnic-inspired dishes, creating a welcoming spot for daily visitors and locals alike. Visit the Uncommon Grain website at TheUncommonGrain.com
