American Mobile Insurance Exits Florida, Cancels Policies for 1,200 Mobile & Manufactured Homes

American Mobile Insurance Exchange has canceled about 1,200 mobile and manufactured home policies in Florida, citing financial issues as the reason for their exit from the market. Affected policyholders should seek new coverage, with Citizens Property Insurance Corporation being a probable choice due to the high risk associated with these types of homes, which are prone to severe weather damage. Although this cancellation adds to the challenges of insuring mobile and manufactured homes, Florida’s overall insurance market is improving. Average rate hikes are under 2%, and some companies are even reducing rates. Legislative reforms have enhanced the industry's stability, marking a significant improvement after nearly a decade of underwriting losses. Policyholders are assured that insurers will fulfill claims during hurricane season if coverage is provided. (See Story at WESH.com)

Community Mourns as Daytona Beach Jewelry Store Owner is Fatally Shot

Ghazi Osta, known as "Gus," was fatally shot at Volusia Gold Diamond & Loans in Daytona Beach by 83-year-old John Craiger, who allegedly targeted Osta while he worked behind the jewelry counter. Osta’s wife, Leigh, mourned the loss of her husband of nearly 40 years, describing him as a beloved figure in the community. Their son, David, along with two other customers, attempted to intervene by confronting Craiger and using objects in the store, but Osta was pronounced dead at the hospital. Craiger is currently held in Volusia County Jail without bond as the police investigation continues. The family has set up a GoFundMe page to cover funeral costs. The store has become a memorial to Osta, who was remembered for his kindness.
