Ormond Beach Begins Comprehensive Plan Update for 2045, Seeks Public Input

Ormond Beach is updating its Comprehensive Plan for 2045, a state-required process that occurs every seven years. The city’s last update, in 2010, was deemed unnecessary in 2017. The new plan must be completed by June 2025. A Community Engagement Meeting will take place on August 26, 2024, at City Hall, with refreshments and ice cream provided. The Planning Board will review plan elements starting September 12, with a City Commission workshop scheduled for February 4, 2025, to discuss proposed changes. Residents can offer feedback through an online survey. Residents can participate at www.surveymonkey.com/r/CompPlan2045UpdateSurvey

Minimal Impact from Hurricane Debby on Flagler Beach's Sand Renourishment

Hurricane Debby caused only minimal erosion to Flagler Beach’s sand renourishment project, which remains largely unaffected. The project, designed by the Army Corps of Engineers and extending the beach berm to 140 feet, includes extra sand to handle natural sand movement. About two-thirds of the project is complete, with additional funds allocated to enhance the area around the pier. Flagler County’s investment of $1.3 million aims to address significant erosion in that section. The project, funded by state recovery funds, is expected to finish by August, barring any delays. Local business owner Johnny Lulgjuraj commended the project for its positive impact on coastal protection and community resilience.

Community Volunteers Sought for School Traffic Safety in Volusia County

As Central Florida schools reopen, Volusia County is enhancing efforts to ensure students’ safe arrival. In response to the tragic death of Shaolan “Lana” Kamaly, a fourth-grader who was killed by a speeding driver while biking to Sugar Mill Elementary on May 24, the Volusia Sheriff’s Office is introducing a new school traffic safety volunteer program.

Sheriff Mike Chitwood, reflecting on the incident, emphasized the need for community involvement in improving school traffic safety. The initiative aims to recruit and train volunteers—parents, grandparents, and guardians—to assist in areas not covered by existing crossing guards.

The program allows volunteers to select their preferred hours, days, and schools. Currently, only a few residents have signed up, prompting a call for more community participation. Local residents, such as Amy Hyder, support the program and hope it will encourage safer driving near schools.

Additionally, the Sheriff’s Office plans to hire 10 new crossing guards. For more information or to volunteer, residents can contact [email protected].

How Much Benadryl Can You Give a Dog Before Grooming? Doses and Warnings

Diphenhydramine, the active ingredient in Benadryl, is sometimes used as a mild sedative to help dogs during grooming. However, it’s essential to use the correct formulation—look for diphenhydramine as the sole active ingredient, not Benadryl-D, which contains pseudoephedrine and can be harmful to dogs.

Dosage Guidelines

For initial use, a safe dosage is 1 to 2 mg of diphenhydramine per pound of your dog’s body weight. For example, a 10-pound dog would typically receive about half a 25 mg tablet. For smaller dogs, 10 mg tablets are available. Though the toxic dose is relatively high, it’s crucial to avoid overdose.

Signs of Overdose

Be vigilant for symptoms of toxicity, including:

- Hyperactivity|
- Agitation
- Fever
- Unsteady movement
- Tremors
- Excessive drooling
- Rapid heartbeat

Alternatives for Dog Anxiety

Benadryl may not always be effective. Alternatives include:

- Calming Treats: Melatonin or passion fruit chews can help alleviate minor stress.

- Acepromazine: An older sedative available through veterinarians, typically used for more aggressive dogs.

- Prescription Anxiety Medications: Consult your vet for mood-altering drugs suitable for severe anxiety.

Before administering Benadryl, test it at home to gauge its effect. Start with 1 mg per pound and adjust if necessary, up to 4 mg per pound. Always inform the groomer about any medication your dog has taken, and consult with your veterinarian, especially if your dog has underlying health issues or is on other medications.
