New FDEP Guidelines Provide 100% Reimbursement for Sand Placement After Hurricanes
Effective July 1, 2024, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) has revamped its Hurricane Restoration Reimbursement Grant Program (HRRGP), introducing substantial enhancements to assist oceanfront property owners affected by the 2022 hurricanes. The updated program now offers 100% reimbursement for sand placement projects, covering all associated costs including sand, transport, placement, and permitting, with no upper limit. Property owners and condominiums who previously applied for HRRGP funding are encouraged to reapply under these new guidelines to maximize their potential reimbursement.
Additionally, the reimbursement cap for condominiums has increased to $600,000 from the previous $300,000, allowing for greater financial recovery for armament repairs. Single-family home owners can now receive up to $300,000 for armament expenses. Since its launch, the program has already provided over $19 million to nearly 300 applicants in Volusia County, significantly aiding hurricane recovery efforts.

Hurricane Ernesto Strengthens as It Heads Toward Bermuda; Florida's Beaches Warned of Rough Surf
Hurricane Ernesto, now with winds of 85 mph, is forecasted to become a major hurricane by Friday, potentially reaching Bermuda on Saturday. While the storm is expected to remain well offshore from Florida, its effects will still impact the eastern coast, particularly Volusia and Flagler counties. Swells from Ernesto are anticipated to create dangerous surf conditions and rip currents along local beaches. The National Weather Service warns of poor to hazardous boating conditions, with seas rising up to 8 feet by Friday. A Small Craft Advisory is in effect due to the increasing swells. Beachgoers are advised to avoid the hazardous surf, and small craft operators should exercise caution in offshore waters.
