Historic FEMA Grant to Boost Training at Volusia County Fire Rescue & Ormond Beach
Photo: Spectrum News
Volusia County Fire Rescue has received its largest Assistance to Firefighters Grant, exceeding $583,000 from FEMA, to enhance its firefighter training programs. Ormond Beach Fire also received a grant of $34,070 for similar training. The grant will support ongoing education for all firefighter levels, streamline training by conducting it in-house rather than out-of-state, and accelerate the process over the next two years. Key goals include training approximately 90 personnel in incident command and certifying over 100 firefighters as Driver/Operators. This initiative aims to increase department versatility and operational efficiency. Lt. Jeremy Karaginis of the Volusia County Professional Firefighters’ Association underscored the grant’s significance for improving firefighter safety and skills. The county believes this funding will greatly enhance emergency response capabilities. FEMA also awarded Assistance to Firefighters Grants to eight other Central Florida organizations this year.

Volusia County Warns of Dangerous Rip Currents Due to Hurricane Ernesto
Hurricane Ernesto, while not expected to hit Volusia County directly, will generate dangerous rip currents along the coast this weekend. Local officials are urging beachgoers to stay in water no deeper than waist height and to be especially cautious if using flotation devices. Lifeguards, skilled in detecting rip currents, will be vigilant, and visitors should follow their instructions closely. Families with young children and novice swimmers are advised to remain in shallow water and always swim near a staffed lifeguard tower. Swimmers caught in rip currents should swim parallel to the shore to break free. If unable to reach safety, they should signal for help immediately. For emergency situations, 911 should be called. To stay informed about lifeguard locations and beach conditions, the Volusia Beaches app is recommended.

SpaceX successfully launched the Maxar 2 mission on Thursday morning from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station using a Falcon 9 rocket. The launch, which occurred at 9 a.m. from Space Launch Complex 40, is part of a series of missions to place six WorldView Legion satellites into orbit. The Maxar 2 mission follows the earlier successful deployment of the first two satellites from California. This flight marks the 16th use of the Falcon 9’s first stage booster, which has supported various missions including CRS-26 and multiple Starlink launches. After stage separation, the booster landed at SpaceX’s Landing Zone 1 at Cape Canaveral.

Slow Cooked Pineapple Pork Loin
INGREDIENTS
2-3 lb pork loin (trimmed of excess fat)
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
salt and pepper
8 cloves garlic (minced)
1/4 cup soy sauce
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 23.5 ounces can pineapple chunks with juice
INSTRUCTIONS
Trim pork loin of excess fat, season with salt and pepper. Set aside.
Heat a large pan over medium-high heat. Add oil, once the oil is hot, add the pork loin and brown on each side for about 2-4 minutes or until golden.
Add the pork to the slow cooker, rub with garlic. Add soy sauce and pineapple chunks with pineapple juice to the slow cooker. Distribute the brown sugar evenly over the top of the pork.
Put the lid on the slow cooker and cook on low for 4-6 hours, for a soft pork loin, that can still be sliced.
NOTE: If you want the pork extra soft, to make shredded pineapple pork, cook it on low for 8-10 hours, making sure during the cooking process, to lift the lid a few times and using a ladle pour the juices over the pork in order to keep it moist. After you shred the pork, add it back to the slow cooker and cook it on low for another hour.
Serve and enjoy!
