U.S. Capital Alliance Given New Deadline and Interest for Hunter’s Ridge Impact Fees

The Flagler County School Board has extended the deadline for U.S. Capital Alliance LLC to fulfill its impact fee obligations for the Hunter’s Ridge project. The developer must now pay the remaining $1.84 million, plus $69,000 in interest, by October 31. The agreement, initially made in May 2022, required a total of $3 million in payments, including $2 million for impact fee credits and $1 million as a donation. Although partial payments were made, the final amount was overdue. The new agreement includes interest to address the delay and prevent future issues. The School Board stressed the importance of enforcing this interest to deter similar delays from other developers. If the developer does not meet the new deadline, it may face further consequences, including complications with future permits.

A1A Seawall Construction Begins in Volusia County

Construction on a new seawall along State Road A1A in Volusia County will begin on September 3 and 4. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is set to start work on the second segment of the seawall, extending from Sunrise Avenue to Marlin Drive in Ormond-by-the-Sea. This phase follows the ongoing construction of a seawall in Flagler Beach, with both walls covering around 2.6 miles. Initial activities will include temporary lane closures and traffic shifts to accommodate the project. Crews will clear vegetation and add sand to prepare the foundation, with drilling for the wall anticipated to start this fall. Some dune walkovers will be temporarily closed, but alternative access will be available. The FDOT is adhering to environmental regulations to protect wildlife, including sea turtles. The project is part of an effort to bolster protection against storms and erosion.

High-Speed Pursuit in Stolen Ferrari Leads to Arrest of Rhode Island Fugitive

Jonathan Costa - Flagler County Sherriff

Johnathan Costa, a 19-year-old from Rhode Island, was arrested in Flagler County on Tuesday after a high-speed chase in a stolen Ferrari 488 Spider. Costa, who was wanted for an armed home invasion in Cranston, Rhode Island, led Flagler County deputies on a pursuit that briefly closed major roads including US-1 and I-95. The chase, which reached speeds over 100 miles per hour, ended when Costa was tracked to a residence on Royal Palm Lane where the stolen Ferrari was found concealed under tarps. Costa was arrested after deputies surrounded the house and ordered him to surrender. He was booked into the county jail on multiple charges, including armed violent crime and conspiracy, and is being held without bond. Sheriff Rick Staly praised the law enforcement response and highlighted the dangers posed by Costa’s reckless driving.

Service Dog Dispute Leads to Allegations of Discrimination Against Bunnell Restaurant

AI Generated Image

A Bunnell restaurant is facing allegations of discrimination after an incident involving a service dog. Thomas Broadway, a disabled veteran, recorded a video showing a heated exchange with the restaurant owner and his daughter. The confrontation, which led to Broadway being asked to leave, centers on the owner’s demand for a service jacket, which is not required by law. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) prohibits businesses from asking for service dog documentation or details about a disability. The restaurant claims they did not refuse service due to the dog but rather because of Broadway's reaction. Broadway disputes this, stating he was denied service and his attempts to explain the ADA were dismissed. The State Attorney’s Office is reviewing the case, and Broadway has filed a complaint for violating his civil rights. Attorney Charles Brady advises businesses to be well-informed about ADA regulations.

Daylight Savings Poll Results

A Few Comments…

  • “I don’t like changing the time. Leave it on daylight savings time year round. ”

  • “For me, having it stay light later in the day is a gift. As I've gotten older, driving in the dark has become an issue to the point that I don't go out in the evening during Standard Time. When it gets dark at 5PM, my day ends. It's awful, and I'm not the only one.”

  • “Would be so much nicer if time was just left alone, like it is now!!!”

  • “Keeping the sun out longer allows for less criminal activity and allows people more time to enjoy the day with family in the late afternoon & evening”
