Volusia County Environmental Board Survives Disbanding Vote Amid Contentious Debate
The Volusia County Council narrowly avoided disbanding its Environment and Natural Resources Advisory Board (ENRAC) after a motion to eliminate the board ended in a tied vote. Councilman David Santiago argued that ENRAC had fulfilled its mandate and suggested that its responsibilities could be absorbed by existing county bodies. However, several council members, including Chair Jeff Brower, opposed the motion, emphasizing the board's importance in advising on environmental standards, particularly regarding flooding and Low-Impact Development. The council ultimately reappointed eleven incumbents to the board, with one vacancy remaining.

Authorities are urging beachgoers to exercise caution when digging in the sand after a recent incident where Cocoa Beach Police had to fill in a large hole left on the beach. The police warn that deep holes can become unstable, posing risks to both people and wildlife. This concern follows a tragic event in March 2024 when a 7-year-old girl in South Florida died after a hole she was digging with her brother collapsed. Cocoa Beach Police Major Thomas Cooper also noted that large holes can trap sea turtles, affecting their ability to reproduce. While the emphasis is on educating the public, a local ordinance allows for a $100 fine for those who do not comply with filling in deep holes. However, fines are seen as a last resort, with the primary goal being the safety of all beach visitors.
