Volusia Officials Seek Answers as Belvedere Terminals Stays Mum
Photo: Belvedere Terminals
Belvedere Terminals continues to withhold information regarding its fuel farm project in Ormond Beach, despite a $10 million state allocation to aid in relocating the facility. Volusia County officials have not received any updates from the company for months, prompting County Manager George Recktenwald to reach out to CEO Edwin Cothron in late August. Recktenwald’s letter underscores frustration over the lack of communication and urges the company to clarify its intentions. Meanwhile, the company’s submission of an Environmental Resource Permit to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection has raised concerns over wetland impacts. The state funding is designated to support the relocation of the project within Volusia, Flagler, or Brevard counties. Local officials and residents alike are left in limbo, anxious for a resolution to the situation.

A1A Seawall Project Delayed in Ormond-by-the-Sea, Set to Begin September 9
The construction of a buried seawall between Sunrise Avenue and Marlin Drive in Ormond-by-the-Sea, meant to start after Labor Day, has been postponed to September 9. The project, managed by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), is part of a broader effort to protect the A1A highway from erosion and storm damage, particularly after hurricanes Ian and Nicole.
Once completed, the 1.3-mile seawall will shield homes and businesses from future storms. Though the project is welcomed by many in the area, some local businesses are concerned about potential disruptions, including slower traffic and parking shortages. Lagerheads Bar and Grill staff noted that similar construction in Flagler Beach has caused traffic delays, though they recognize the seawall’s long-term benefits. FDOT has pledged to work closely with the community to minimize disruptions, with the seawall expected to be finished by the end of next year.

Florida's Ban on Sleeping in Public Goes Into Effect Next Month
AI Generated Image
A new Florida law banning people from sleeping in public spaces, such as parks and rights of way, takes effect on October 1, 2024. Sponsored by Sen. Jonathan Martin, R-Fort Myers, the law aims to reduce unsheltered homelessness by encouraging local governments to provide safer, designated areas for temporary camping that meet specific health and safety standards. Critics, including Sen. Shevrin Jones, D-Miami Gardens, argue the state is not offering adequate resources for local governments to effectively address homelessness and fear the measure could merely hide the issue without solving it.
The law also allows residents and business owners to sue local governments for permitting illegal camping on public property. Counties with financial constraints are exempt from some requirements. The measure comes as Volusia County reported a 17.8% rise in homelessness, with over 1,000 individuals identified in the most recent count.

Health Experts Warn of Increasing Mosquito-Borne Illnesses: Here’s How to Stay Safe
Mosquito-borne illnesses like West Nile virus, Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE), malaria, and dengue are on the rise in the U.S., prompting health officials to urge caution. With mosquitoes able to transmit viruses when they bite, experts recommend avoiding exposure, particularly from dusk to dawn. Wearing protective clothing and using repellent is key, especially in mosquito-prone areas.
West Nile virus, the most common mosquito-borne illness in the U.S., has been reported in 33 states this year. EEE, though rare, is potentially deadly, and recent cases in Massachusetts have led to outdoor activity restrictions in some areas. Additionally, malaria, eradicated in the U.S. since the 1950s, has seen local cases in Florida and Texas for the first time in 20 years, while dengue has spread in some states.
Experts stress that while treatments are limited, preventive measures like reducing mosquito exposure remain the best protection.
