Local Outcry as Florida Revives Plan to Pave Historic Tomoka Park Road
AI Generated Photo
The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) has renewed its plans to pave a 1.5-mile dirt road in Tomoka State Park, sparking protests from local residents and environmental advocates. Critics argue the project could harm the park’s ecosystem and historical character, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. They are also frustrated by a lack of transparency, claiming they only learned about the plan through independent research. The FDEP contends that paving is necessary to address safety concerns, as the unpaved road becomes hazardous during flooding and erosion. However, opponents believe the $1.5 million allocated for the project would be better spent on other park improvements. Environmental groups are urging city commissioners to oppose the plan, calling for an alternative, more eco-friendly solution. As tensions rise, residents remain committed to protecting the park’s natural integrity.

Nearly 900 Sea Turtle Nests Monitored by Volusia Volunteers Amid Ongoing Protection Efforts
In Volusia County, volunteers from the Volusia/Flagler Turtle Patrol continue to monitor and protect sea turtle nests as the nesting season, which runs from May 1 to October 31, begins to wind down. This year, nearly 900 nests have been recorded, with over 41,000 hatchlings making their way to the ocean. Volunteers, like longtime member Stacey Bell, track nests and assist hatchlings by ensuring the beach is free of hazards such as ruts or artificial lights. As washback season begins, which lasts from August to November, the focus shifts to rescuing juvenile turtles swept ashore by strong winds. These turtles, often found in sargassum seaweed, are too weak to return to the ocean without assistance. Bell stresses the importance of maintaining natural beaches to ensure that future generations of turtles can return to nest. Stranded turtles should be reported to local rehabilitation centers or Florida Fish and Wildlife.

SpaceX Falcon 9 Booster Completes 15th Mission, Deploys 21 Starlink Satellites
SpaceX successfully launched 21 new Starlink satellites into low-Earth orbit on Thursday morning, after postponing the original launch due to unfavorable conditions in the Atlantic. The Falcon 9 rocket lifted off at 11:33 a.m. from Florida, deploying satellites that will expand SpaceX’s global internet service. Thirteen of the satellites are equipped with direct-to-cell technology, representing a notable advance in satellite communications.
This mission also marked the 15th flight for the Falcon 9 first-stage booster, which previously supported multiple missions, including Crew-5 and several Starlink deployments. After stage separation, the booster landed on the "Just Read The Instructions" droneship in the Atlantic Ocean, underscoring SpaceX's successful strategy of rocket reusability. This launch is part of SpaceX’s broader efforts to build a comprehensive satellite network aimed at improving internet access across the globe.
