Storm Erosion Hits A1A Again - Repairs Complete, Seawall Plans Move Forward
Photo: FDOT
FDOT crews have repaired a section of State Road A1A in Ormond-by-the-Sea, which experienced erosion during Thursday night’s severe weather. While the asphalt remained undamaged, erosion affected the road’s shoulders, leading to temporary closures. The repairs were completed quickly, with one lane reopened by late Thursday. Local businesses, such as Oceanside Beach Bar & Grill, have been repeatedly impacted by similar washouts since Hurricanes Ian and Nicole in 2022.
In response to ongoing erosion issues, FDOT, in partnership with local agencies, is constructing two buried seawalls along vulnerable sections of A1A, including Ormond-by-the-Sea. Temporary traffic adjustments will begin soon as part of the project, with dune clearing and pile drilling scheduled for later this year. FDOT is adhering to state and federal environmental regulations, ensuring the protection of sea turtles and other wildlife during construction. Public beach access will remain open, though some walkovers will be temporarily removed and later replaced.

City May Consider Purchasing Land for Ormond Enclave Development
City of Ormond Beach
The 4.9-acre site in Ormond Beach, slated for the Ormond Enclave apartment development, is now up for sale for $1.7 million. Approved by the Ormond Beach City Commission in July 2023, the project includes plans for 64 rental units across eight two-story buildings. The development, located between Dix Avenue and Highland Avenue, has raised concerns among residents about increased traffic on narrow neighborhood roads. Originally known as "The Courtyard at Ormond," the project was reconfigured last year to increase the number of residential units by removing a proposed commercial space. At a recent City Commission meeting, Commissioner Lori Tolland suggested the city might consider purchasing the land, highlighting potential missed opportunities for the community. However, no formal action has been taken regarding a city purchase.
