Volusia County Offers $5 Million to Reimburse Landlords for Hurricane Ian Repairs
Image: Volusia County
Volusia County's Transform386 initiative is now accepting applications for its Rental Repair Program, which aims to restore the affordable rental housing stock in the county. The program offers $5 million in funding to reimburse landlords for repairs already made to their rental properties damaged by Hurricane Ian.
The Rental Repair Program can reimburse up to $50,000 per unit, with a maximum of eight units per landlord. The reimbursement assistance is available for rental properties with four or fewer attached units in Volusia County that were either occupied by renters or available for rent at the time of the storm. The landlord must still maintain ownership of the rental property.
Participating landlords will be required to adhere to a twenty-year affordability period that requires the owner(s) to lease the unit(s) to low-to-moderate income households earning 80% or less of the county's area median income and to lease the units at affordable rental fees. Landlords will also have to maintain insurance, including flood, wind, and/or hazard insurance, as mandated by federal, state, and local regulations.
For more information or to apply, visit www.transform386.org, email [email protected], or call 386-473-5260.

UF Researchers Explore Olive Oil’s Role in Reducing Cholesterol
University of Florida researchers explored olive oil’s health benefits in a recent study, focusing on its effects on LDL cholesterol, a key factor in heart disease. The study involved 40 participants at risk for cardiovascular issues, who alternated between consuming small and large amounts of extra virgin olive oil over several weeks. While both regimens helped reduce LDL cholesterol, the research highlighted the importance of overall dietary habits. Participants who consumed lower amounts of olive oil but also limited red and processed meats, added sugars, and saturated fats saw greater reductions in cholesterol compared to those consuming higher amounts of olive oil alone. The findings suggest that while olive oil contributes to heart health, plant-based fats like avocados and nuts may offer superior benefits. UF researchers plan further studies on related topics such as diet quality and well-being.

The Drunken Duck: Community and Craft Beer at Holly Hill’s Newest Brewery
The Drunken Duck Brewing Co. opened in early August, quickly becoming a local favorite in a historic building in Holly Hill. Owners Kurt and Erin Strauss, both lifelong locals, trace the brewery’s origins to Kurt’s backyard, where he began brewing beer as a hobby. Known for producing high-quality, smooth beers across various styles, Kurt’s brews range from 4% to 10% ABV.
In addition to beer, the brewery is community-focused, hosting events like book club meetings and ukulele classes. The name "Drunken Duck" was inspired by a family tradition of rubber duck tattoos.
For non-beer drinkers, the brewery offers a selection of wines and regularly features food trucks. Their “Duckcuterie” boards, a twist on charcuterie, add to the experience. The Strausses plan to release new brews like hard ginger ale and root beer soon. For more information, visit https://www.drunkenduckbrewingcompany.com/
