Cassen Park Redevelopment Heads to Ormond Beach Planning Board for Review Tonight
The Ormond Beach Planning Board will review a special exception for the $2.8 million Cassen Park redevelopment plan on Thursday, September 12. The project, which began planning in late 2022, seeks waivers for building setbacks and landscaping island requirements. The redesign includes a new building for the bait shop, expanded parking, native gardens, and a plaza with picnic tables and a sculpture. The redevelopment, inspired by the 2019 Downtown Master Plan, is expected to begin construction in January 2025, with completion by July 2025. The meeting will also cover zoning updates and amendments to the Land Development Code. The Planning Board will meet at 6 p.m. in the City Commission Chambers at City Hall.

Ormond Beach Marks 9/11 Anniversary with Memorial Walk Across Granada Bridge
Residents and veterans gathered under the Granada Bridge on Wednesday for a Remembrance Walk to honor the victims of the September 11 attacks, organized by the local nonprofit Ormond Strong. The event, held at 8 a.m., also paid tribute to military veterans and first responders. Among the attendees was William Lindroth, who commemorated four firefighter friends from his hometown of Freeport, New York, lost during the attacks. Participants formed a circle to share reflections on the day, and the ceremony concluded with a walk across the bridge amid rainfall. Ormond Strong, founded in 2015, continues its mission of supporting local soldiers and veterans.

Update: Two Juveniles Arrested After Making Threats Against Students in Volusia County Schools
Photo: Thomas Cook
Two juveniles, ages 10 and 11, were arrested in Volusia County after making threats to shoot others at Halifax Academy and Westside Elementary School. The 11-year-old boy allegedly threatened a student at Halifax Academy via text after being teased for being rejected by a classmate. He was charged with written threats to kill. The 10-year-old at Westside Elementary was seen with a BB gun in his waistband and was arrested after throwing the weapon’s magazine over a fence. These arrests follow a recent school shooting in Georgia that left four dead and nine injured, heightening safety concerns.
A Sudden "Pop" in the Head Leads to Life-Saving Aneurysm Diagnosis for Florida Woman
For Peggi Wegener, 65, a quiet Saturday afternoon in January took a sudden and alarming turn when she felt a distinct “popping” sensation in her head. Initially, she brushed off the experience, attributing the double vision and brief disorientation to her contact lenses. However, the following day, she awoke with a worsening headache and nausea. Concerned, she called her brother, a retired physician, who urged her to go to the emergency room immediately.
By the time she arrived at the hospital, her symptoms had intensified. After undergoing several tests, including an MRI, Wegener was diagnosed with a brain aneurysm, a condition that affects approximately 2% of Americans. Although many aneurysms remain undetected and asymptomatic, Wegener’s situation required urgent attention.
A week later, she underwent surgery using a Medtronic Pipeline device, a minimally invasive stent designed to divert blood flow from the aneurysm, paired with endovascular coils to further prevent blood from entering the damaged area. Wegener’s surgery was successful, and to her surprise, she experienced minimal pain during recovery.
The experience of surviving an aneurysm has reshaped Wegener’s outlook on life. With the support of her family and medical team, she embraced her recovery with a renewed sense of gratitude, reflecting on the fragility of life—a perspective she had first encountered five years earlier when diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer.
Wegener’s story highlights the unpredictable nature of aneurysms, which can present suddenly, like in her case, or remain undetected for years. According to medical experts, the goal is to identify and treat aneurysms before they rupture, a potentially fatal event. Avoiding high-risk behaviors, such as smoking or uncontrolled hypertension, can help reduce the chances of an aneurysm developing or rupturing. But for those who do discover an aneurysm, advances in minimally invasive treatments, like the one Wegener received, offer hope.
“I’m going to live my life,” Wegener said, reflecting on her recovery. “I’m not going to sit around and wait to die.”
