Sheriff Chitwood Warns Parents, Students Face Public Exposure in Volusia's Crackdown on Swatting
In response to a surge in false threats disrupting Volusia County schools, at a news conference on Friday, Sheriff Mike Chitwood has vowed to publicly shame students and parents involved in swatting incidents. During a press conference, Chitwood highlighted the 207 threats received since the school year began, with 54 tips coming in a single night. Frustrated with the disruption and cost, Chitwood warned that arrest photos would be publicized, and "perp walks" may follow for those responsible. Parents who are found negligent may face similar consequences.
These false threats, known as swatting, have led to arrests, including two students for social media posts threatening violence. The district has increased security measures, including random classroom screenings and plans for a firearms detection K-9, to maintain safety. School officials stressed the importance of parental involvement to prevent further incidents.
Police Arrest 18-Year-Old for Threatening Ormond Beach Students from Georgia
Kaveon Smith - Volusia County Corrections
Kaveon Smith, 18, turned himself in to Ormond Beach police after being charged with making violent threats toward middle school students from Georgia. Smith is accused of using Instagram to target specific students at Ormond Beach Middle School, posting disturbing messages and photos of a pistol. The threats were brought to the attention of school officials by a concerned parent, leading to an investigation. Despite the alarming content, police concluded there was no immediate danger to the school or its students.
According to police, Smith allegedly used Instagram to make the threats, posting disturbing messages and images, including photos of a pistol. A concerned parent brought the content to school officials, leading to the investigation. The threats, directed at a group of students, caused significant fear among them, though authorities later determined there was no immediate danger to the school.
Smith was booked Thursday evening and released on $100,000 bail the following day. His location out of state had extended the investigation’s timeline. Ormond Beach police emphasized the importance of parental involvement in monitoring online activities, encouraging parents to report any suspicious behavior to authorities.
