Ormond Beach Police Warn of Mail Theft Surge at USPS Locations

AI Immage

Ormond Beach police are investigating a rise in mail thefts at local USPS locations, warning residents of a method involving “snorkel boxes” hidden in blue mailboxes. The thieves use these devices to intercept mail, leading to instances of fraud involving stolen and altered checks. Citizens are urged to drop off mail inside post office buildings and report any suspicious activity. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service is actively investigating the incidents and advises victims to contact them for assistance.

Sheriff's 'Perp Walk' Promise Realized: 11-Year-Old Arrested for School Threats

Weapons recovered by Volusia County Sheriff at 11-year old student’s home

Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood made good on his promise to take a tough stance against school threats, publicly sharing the arrest of an 11-year-old boy accused of threatening to shoot up two middle schools in Port Orange. The boy was shown in a video being placed in handcuffs and later ankle chains before being taken to detention. Sheriff Chitwood had warned that children making such threats would be publicly "perp walked" as part of a broader effort to address a surge in school-related threats, which he said had reached alarming levels.

The boy, who allegedly compiled a list of names and targets, later claimed the threats were a joke. Deputies recovered airsoft rifles and other weapons in their investigation. The child has been charged with a felony for making a written threat of a mass shooting.
