Brosemer Calls Sign Controversy "Trivial," Stresses School Board's Larger Challenges

Volusia County School Board candidate Donna Brosemer has dismissed sign vandalism as a “trivial issue,” despite acknowledging that some of her signs have been damaged or stolen. Brosemer, a former lobbyist, secured 43.71% of the vote in the August primary and is running against incumbent Carl Persis in a runoff. Persis, who earned 39.62% of the vote, offered a $1,000 reward after his campaign signs were vandalized. Brosemer downplayed the issue, arguing that signs are only useful for raising name recognition, which Persis does not lack.

Brosemer chose not to pursue legal action over reports of her signs being removed by Persis supporters, focusing instead on more significant district issues. The controversy has drawn attention from local groups, but Brosemer insists that these incidents should not overshadow critical school board matters.

Volusia Leaders Postpone Rural Boundary Talks to March 2025

During a Tuesday meeting, the Volusia County Council voted 4-3 to delay discussions on a charter amendment related to rural boundary protections until March 2025. Councilman Jake Johansson, who proposed the delay, emphasized the need for greater public understanding of the issue, despite rising interest. Chair Jeff Brower, however, pushed for an earlier start, arguing that the amendment would help prevent "hostile annexations" of rural areas — a term that sparked debate among council members over its accuracy.

The proposed amendment follows a 2004 attempt to implement urban growth boundaries, which was overturned in court. Johansson argued that more time is needed to gather input from stakeholders, while Brower contended that postponing the discussion might limit the council's control over the amendment’s outcome. The vote to delay was met with opposition from Brower and two other council members, signaling ongoing divisions on the issue.

Delta Cycle Recalls Ceiling Hoists with Straps Due to Injury Hazard

Florida’s minimum wage will rise from $12 to $13 on September 30th, part of a voter-approved plan to increase the wage to $15 by 2026. The policy aims to address the rising cost of living in Florida, which has seen some of the highest price hikes in the country. Wages for tipped workers will also increase, with a minimum of $9.98 per hour this year, rising to $11.98 by 2026.

The wage hike is expected to boost workers' purchasing power when adjusted for inflation, but critics warn it could strain small businesses and lead to price hikes. Economists remain divided on the overall impact, as inflation, corporate pricing, and global factors complicate the debate. Florida's move aligns with broader national conversations around income inequality and wage stagnation, particularly as essential costs like housing and food continue to rise.

49-Year-Old Surfer Dies After Accident at Sunglow Pier in Daytona

From GoFundMe Page

Jorge Alvarado, a 49-year-old surfer from Port Orange, tragically died after an accident at Sunglow Pier in Daytona Beach Shores. The incident occurred around 9 a.m. on Friday when Alvarado apparently hit his head on a sandbar before becoming tangled with a piling under the pier, according to Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue officials. Witnesses reported seeing him strike the piling before going under in an unguarded area.

A GoFundMe page organized in Alvarado’s memory confirmed his death and described him as a vibrant and joyful individual who was passionate about surfing and deeply loved by family and friends. The page also thanked the community for its prayers and support during this difficult time.

Temu Denies Data Breach Amid Hacker's Claims of Leaked Customer Database

Temu, the fast-growing e-commerce platform, is denying claims of a major data breach after a hacker allegedly leaked a database containing information on 87 million customers. The hacker, using the alias ‘smokinthashit,’ posted on BreachForums, advertising the sale of data purportedly stolen from Temu’s systems, which includes sensitive customer information like shipping addresses and hashed passwords.

Temu has strongly rejected the allegations, stating that an internal investigation found no evidence of a breach, and the data being circulated does not match their records. In a statement, the company assured users that their information is secure and that they follow industry-leading practices for data protection.

With its growing global presence and competitive pricing model, Temu relies heavily on maintaining consumer trust. While the company insists the breach claims are false, even the mention of a potential breach could pose challenges to its reputation.
