Historic Gift from Local Philanthropists to Fund Major MOAS Expansion

Ormond Beach philanthropists Cici and J. Hyatt Brown have gifted the Museum of Arts and Sciences (MOAS) a $150 million endowment, marking the largest contribution in the institution’s history. The endowment will fund the construction of a 60,000-square-foot, two-story building aimed at transforming MOAS from a "hidden gem" into a community "crown jewel." The project includes a new black-box theater and enhanced exhibit spaces. Part of the donation involves a community matching initiative to raise an additional $25 million. The Browns, long-time supporters of the museum, previously donated over 400 paintings to establish the Cici and Hyatt Brown Museum of Art. MOAS Executive Director Tabitha Schmidt views the gift as a transformational opportunity, with the museum aiming to break ground in 2026. The Browns' donation arrives at a critical time as museums face declining public funding, and MOAS seeks to strengthen its role as a cultural anchor in Daytona Beach.

Bucs Bounce Back: Mainland Shuts Out Matanzas for First Win of the Season

Mainland High School’s football team claimed a pivotal 43-0 victory over Matanzas on Friday, positioning itself as the frontrunner for the District 4-5A title and extending its hopes for a 31st consecutive playoff berth. The win was the first of the season for the Buccaneers, who had faced a grueling opening schedule and entered the game with a 0-5 record. New head coach Jerrime Bell commended his team for overcoming early challenges, including breaking in 18 new starters after last year’s state championship run. Quarterback Sebastian Johnson and a stout defense led the way, with a series of key plays late in the first half that helped Mainland pull ahead 24-0 by halftime. With the victory, the Bucs now hold control of the district and will secure a playoff spot with a win against Belleview later this season, keeping their long-standing postseason streak intact.
