TSA PreCheck Enrollment Event Set for Daytona Beach International Airport

Daytona Beach International Airport will host a TSA PreCheck enrollment event from October 21 to October 25. Travelers can sign up for an appointment online, with slots available from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. each day. The TSA PreCheck program allows participating travelers to expedite the airport screening process by skipping certain requirements like removing shoes, belts, and laptops during security checks. Applicants will need to complete an in-person fingerprinting process and provide proper identification and proof of citizenship. Enrollment costs $78 for a five-year membership, with applicants typically receiving their Known Traveler Number within five days. TSA PreCheck is available at over 200 airports nationwide, and many major airlines participate in the program. Parents enrolled in TSA PreCheck can also bring children under 12 through the expedited security lanes when traveling together.

Jim Lau, Retired Volusia Deputy, Among Those Killed in North Carolina Flooding

Retired Volusia County Sheriff’s deputy Jim Lau died in the floodwaters of Tropical Storm Helene in North Carolina. His body was found Saturday morning by a swift-water rescue team after witnesses reported seeing a truck submerged in a river the day before. Authorities confirmed that the vehicle matched the description of Lau’s truck. Lau, who had been serving as a courthouse security officer in Macon County, had gone missing after lunch on Friday, prompting a large-scale search effort. Lau had a notable career with the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office from 1982 to 2005, contributing significantly to the development of its Crime Scene program. Volusia Sheriff Mike Chitwood expressed his condolences, praising Lau’s dedication and service. The incident is being investigated by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, as the state continues to deal with widespread devastation caused by Helene, which has claimed at least 107 lives.

Limited Power? Here's How to Let Loved Ones Know You're Safe After a Hurricane

In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, which left millions without power and caused widespread devastation across the southeastern U.S., communication has become a critical challenge. With more than 160 lives lost and hundreds of people still unaccounted for, staying connected with loved ones is essential—especially when power and cell service are disrupted.

Here are some practical tips on how to reach out, even if you're facing limited service or a dying phone battery:

  1. Update Your Voicemail: Change your greeting to let people know you're safe. For example, you might say, "This is Jen. No power as of Wednesday, Oct. 2. I'll reach out when I can." This way, callers are informed even if you can't answer.

  2. Use Social Media: Platforms like Facebook and X (formerly Twitter) can be lifelines during emergencies. Post an update or use Facebook's Safety Check to mark yourself as safe. Instagram Stories and WhatsApp messages are also quick ways to stay in touch.

  3. Preserve Your Battery: Record a quick voice or text message to send when service is available. Keep communication brief to conserve power, and avoid unnecessary app usage.

By utilizing these methods, you can ensure family and friends know you're okay, even when conventional communication channels are down.

Disaster Relief Organizations Helping With Helene

The situation in Western North Carolina is dire as we have all seen. These organizations are all active in the area. Donations in any amount would be appreciated.

These are all reputable organizations however, we do not endorse or recommend any of these organizations. Use your own due diligence when donating.
