Florida is reeling after Hurricane Milton left at least 17 dead, with officials warning the toll could rise. The hurricane struck Siesta Key, Florida, on October 9 as a Category 3 storm, cutting a destructive path through Central Florida before exiting near Cape Canaveral. Milton's powerful winds exceeding 100 mph, heavy rain, and storm surges led to widespread damage, including severe flooding and wind-battered neighborhoods. Reports indicate that cleanup efforts may take weeks, with many homes, streets, and businesses heavily affected. Tropical tornadoes accompanying the storm only added to the devastation. As recovery efforts continue, residents seek updates on local conditions through text alerts, hoping for positive news amidst the destruction. Emergency crews face a challenging road ahead as they work to restore order to affected communities.
A viral hoax on social media has falsely warned Floridians about an imminent threat from "Hurricane Nadine," claiming it is approaching the Gulf of Mexico. The post, which originated from a now-deleted Facebook account, has been widely debunked. While Nadine is the next named storm in line, the system remains a distant tropical wave near Africa, posing no current threat. This misinformation, like many falsehoods online, spread rapidly due to the engagement-driven nature of social media platforms, according to experts. Meanwhile, misleading claims about FEMA’s relief efforts for Hurricane Helene have also circulated, suggesting the agency is offering only $750 in aid. In reality, this sum represents an initial emergency payment, with more assistance available later. FEMA has refuted these claims and launched a webpage to provide accurate information. The incident underscores the persistent challenge of misinformation during crisis events.
ATTENTION BOATERS: Coast Guard Rescues Captain Adrift During Hurricane Milton, Clinging to Cooler-Amazing!!
Photo: USCG
A boat captain was rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard after surviving Hurricane Milton at sea, clinging to a cooler 30 miles off Longboat Key. The captain initially reported being disabled 20 miles off John’s Pass with a crew member. The Coast Guard safely airlifted both individuals, but the captain later returned to attempt boat repairs. While en route back to port, his vessel became further disabled as Hurricane Milton approached, with conditions rapidly worsening. Seas reached 6-8 feet, and winds blew at 30 mph, eventually escalating to 75-90 mph and 20-25-foot waves. The Coast Guard advised the captain to stay with the emergency radio beacon. Contact was lost Wednesday evening as the storm made landfall. Rescue teams found the captain the next day, clinging to a cooler, and transported him to Tampa General Hospital. Officials credited his survival to a life jacket, the radio beacon, and the cooler.

Comments
“Whenever we have just a heavy shower there seems to be standing water in places that it was never seen before.”
“Schools are at capacity… flooding is an issue.”
“New developments cause more traffic and at times cause flooding.”
“Keep Jeff Brower in office! He will help protect our wet lands! Not use them as bargaining chips for favors!”
“Infrastructure is not capable of supporting this level of sustained growth.”
“There has to be consideration of flooding.”
“Our scenic Loop is suffering its beauty from all the building of new homes so close to Old Dixie Highway. Flooding of the road has never been this bad until all the new developments.”
“Proper size retention areas must be part of all developments. The Volusia County must stop allowing the developers purchasing additional land in wetlands instead. This doesn’t work, hurricanes don’t just rain in the wetlands. Impact fees for all new construction should be raised to properly update storm drains and runoffs.”
“We are having flood issues and overpopulation now, we are allowing developers and out-of-town large companies to build and buy our homes and we did not move here to become a Daytona, or a new upcoming Flagler.”
“They just develop any land without regard to where lakes or wetlands are.”
Many of our fellow Floridians as well as folks in Georgia and North Carolina have been hard hit by Hurricanes Helene and Milton. You can help by donating to any of these Relief Organizations. Click Here for list.
