Crowds Expected to Shrink at Biketoberfest After Hurricane Milton
As Daytona Beach and surrounding areas work to recover from Hurricane Milton’s aftermath, Biketoberfest will proceed as planned, bringing motorcycle enthusiasts to the region for its annual four-day event beginning Thursday. Despite lingering floodwaters and ongoing infrastructure repairs, the event’s organizers and local businesses are moving forward with preparations.
Prominent venues, including the popular Sopotnick’s Cabbage Patch Bar and Daytona Harley-Davidson, have confirmed their participation with live music, food vendors, and motorcycle shows. Many hotels and restaurants are also reopening as cleanup efforts progress, according to the Daytona Beach Area Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB), which sponsors the event.
The CVB advised visitors to be mindful of storm damage, including debris and inoperable traffic lights, while navigating the region. Although power restoration and flood recovery are still underway, most attractions are expected to be operational.
Biketoberfest, a smaller fall counterpart to the larger spring Bike Week, typically attracts between 100,000 and 150,000 visitors. However, attendance may be lower this year due to the storm's impact across the Southeast. Many residents in hard-hit areas such as DeLand and Daytona Beach’s Midtown neighborhood remain displaced by flooding.
Bob Davis, president of the Lodging & Hospitality Association of Volusia County, expects attendance to mirror past hurricane-affected editions of the event. “Some will come, but many are dealing with their own storm recovery,” Davis said, referencing prior Biketoberfest events held after storms like Hurricane Matthew in 2016 and Tropical Storm Ian in 2022.
While some hotels remain closed for repairs, others are ready to welcome guests. Visitors are encouraged to contact properties in advance to confirm availability. The forecast for the event is sunny with mild temperatures, offering an inviting backdrop for those who make the trip to Daytona Beach.
Do You Need Help With Storm Damage?
Volusia County residents who were impacted by Hurricane Milton can now apply for federal assistance, as FEMA has officially declared the county a disaster area. This declaration unlocks individual and public assistance, as well as hazard mitigation, to help in recovery.
Residents can submit their applications online at www.disasterassistance.gov, through the FEMA mobile app, or by calling 800-621-3362.
Florida Chamber of Commerce and the Florida Division of Emergency Management activated the Business Damage Assessment Survey in response to Hurricane Milton. Business owners can self-report physical and economic damage caused by Hurricane Milton. Survey responses will allow the state to expedite Hurricane Milton recovery efforts by gathering data and assessing the needs of impacted businesses.
Businesses can complete the survey online by visiting FloridaDisaster.biz and selecting “Hurricane Milton” from the dropdown menu.

SpaceX Makes History with First Booster Catch in Starship Test Flight
SpaceX made history with its latest Starship test flight, achieving a world-first booster recovery using enormous mechanical arms. Following Sunday’s launch from Boca Chica, Texas, the rocket’s 22-story booster autonomously returned to the launch site, where it was caught within centimeters of the target by the so-called “chopstick” arms. The operation reflects SpaceX’s focus on reusability, a key factor in reducing costs and increasing mission frequency.
CEO Elon Musk aims to streamline booster recovery, allowing for quick refits and rapid re-launches. The technique will eventually be employed at Florida’s Kennedy Space Center, where precision landings are critical to public safety at Pad 39A.
The test flight also demonstrated precision in other areas, with the Starship spacecraft completing a successful landing in the Indian Ocean. These achievements move SpaceX closer to its long-term goals of returning astronauts to the moon and, eventually, reaching Mars.

Ormond Homeowners Trapped in Rebuild Cycle as FEMA Delays Continue
AI generated image
Homeowners in an Ormond Beach neighborhood are still waiting for FEMA assistance after experiencing four floods in six years from Hurricanes Irma, Ian, Nicole, and Milton. Bruce and Lisa Chiarizzi say they’ve applied repeatedly for grants to elevate or demolish their home, but FEMA has denied them, citing that their property isn’t in a flood zone. In the meantime, the couple has received around $200,000 for repairs, only to see their efforts washed away by subsequent storms.
Their neighbor, Marilyn Root, who has lived in the area for nearly 50 years, says flooding only began after Hurricane Irma in 2018. Both families have lost furniture, appliances, and irreplaceable memories with each flood. The Chiarizzis are awaiting federal approval for a grant to demolish their home, but delays have left them feeling stuck and overwhelmed. “We can’t move forward, but we can’t keep rebuilding,” said Bruce Chiarizzi.
Coleslaw and Dogs: Hidden Dangers in a Popular Side Dish
AI generated image
While coleslaw is a popular side dish for humans, it isn’t a healthy choice for dogs. Though ingredients like cabbage and carrots are generally safe in moderation, many other common components can pose risks to canine health. Whether store-bought or homemade, coleslaw often contains ingredients such as onions, garlic, or high-fat dressings that are unsafe for dogs.
Breaking Down the Ingredients
At its core, coleslaw typically consists of shredded cabbage and carrots, with added dressings made from mayonnaise, vinegar, and seasonings. Here’s a look at the risks and benefits of each:
Cabbage: Safe in small amounts and nutritious, cabbage provides fiber and vitamins, but it may cause gas in some dogs.
Carrots: A healthy snack, carrots are low in calories, high in vitamins, and can help clean a dog’s teeth.
Risky Ingredients to Avoid
Onions and Garlic: Toxic to dogs, even small amounts can cause anemia, a serious condition.
Coleslaw Dressings: Mayonnaise itself isn’t toxic but is high in fat, which can contribute to weight gain and other health issues.
Xylitol: Occasionally found in low-sugar dressings, this artificial sweetener is extremely dangerous for dogs.
Salt, Sugar, and Dairy: High sodium and sugar content can lead to health complications, while dairy products can upset a dog’s stomach, particularly if they are lactose intolerant.
A Safer Alternative
If you’d like to offer your dog a coleslaw-inspired treat, try a simple mix of raw cabbage and carrots with a small amount of diluted apple cider vinegar (ACV). ACV can support digestion and improve coat health, but it should always be diluted to avoid upsetting your pet’s stomach.
Introduce New Foods with Care
When trying new foods, offer small portions to monitor your dog for any adverse reactions like vomiting or diarrhea. If your dog shows signs of discomfort, discontinue the food immediately.
While it’s best to avoid giving your dog traditional coleslaw, with a little creativity, you can prepare a healthy, pet-safe version that they’ll enjoy.
