Do You Need Help With Storm Damage?
Volusia County residents who were impacted by Hurricane Milton can now apply for federal assistance, as FEMA has officially declared the county a disaster area. This declaration unlocks individual and public assistance, as well as hazard mitigation, to help in recovery.
Residents can submit their applications online at www.disasterassistance.gov, through the FEMA mobile app, or by calling 800-621-3362.
Florida Chamber of Commerce and the Florida Division of Emergency Management activated the Business Damage Assessment Survey in response to Hurricane Milton. Business owners can self-report physical and economic damage caused by Hurricane Milton. Survey responses will allow the state to expedite Hurricane Milton recovery efforts by gathering data and assessing the needs of impacted businesses.
Businesses can complete the survey online by visiting FloridaDisaster.biz and selecting “Hurricane Milton” from the dropdown menu.
The City of Ormond Beach has many disaster recovery resources for Ormond businesses. You can find more information here: OrmondBeach.org/Milton
Mayor Partington Reflects on 20 Years of Service as Ormond Beach Looks to the Future
At the 2024 State of the City address, Ormond Beach officials highlighted economic growth, infrastructure projects, and community resilience, just a week after Hurricane Milton. Mayor Bill Partington underscored the city’s collaborative spirit, crediting partnerships for bringing new businesses and driving key safety initiatives. Notable projects include pedestrian upgrades on State Road A1A and the redesign of the U.S. 1 and I-95 interchange into a "diverging diamond" to reduce traffic accidents. Construction is set for 2027. Plans are also underway for a new police station and emergency operations center.
The event celebrated Partington’s 20 years of service as he prepares to step down and run for the Florida House of Representatives. He was honored by the Ormond Beach Chamber of Commerce with a commemorative clock for his leadership. The election for his successor will be held on November 5, with candidates Susan Persis and Jason Leslie competing for the role.
Flesh-Eating Bacteria Cases Double After Hurricanes Helene, Milton
Florida has seen a surge in Vibrio vulnificus infections, with 37 new cases and four deaths reported since mid-September, following Hurricanes Helene and Milton. This year’s total now stands at 70 cases, compared to 46 in 2023. The bacteria, often called “flesh-eating,” thrives in warm, brackish waters and spreads when storm surges mix polluted floodwaters with coastal areas. Infections occur when contaminated water enters open wounds, leading to severe tissue damage and, in some cases, amputations or death.
Pinellas County has been hardest hit, with other cases reported across Hillsborough, Lee, Pasco, and Charlotte counties. Nationwide, Vibrio vulnificus is responsible for 80,000 illnesses annually, mostly from raw seafood consumption or water exposure. With Florida at risk of surpassing previous records set during Hurricane Ian, health officials are urging residents to avoid saltwater exposure with open wounds and seek medical care at the first sign of infection.
