Inflation-Linked Tax Relief in Focus as Florida Votes on Amendment 5

Florida voters will decide on Amendment 5, one of six constitutional amendments on the ballot. The measure would annually adjust homestead exemptions based on inflation, potentially easing the tax burden for homeowners. If passed, the second homestead exemption would increase yearly, using the Consumer Price Index as a benchmark. Supporters argue that this change will help homeowners keep up with rising costs of living.

However, critics warn that the amendment could lead to significant budget cuts for local governments, which rely on property taxes for essential services like emergency response and infrastructure. They also argue that businesses and rental properties would bear a greater tax burden. The measure is expected to cost local governments $22.8 million in the first year, growing to $111.8 million by 2028. A "yes" vote supports this adjustment, while a "no" vote maintains the current system.

Massive Recall: BrucePac Pulls Nearly 12 Million Pounds of Meat Due to Listeria Concerns

NOTE: This covers MANY brands and products both fresh and frozen. You should review the product list to see if you have any of these products on hand. List updated 10/15/2024

BrucePac, a meat processing company based in Durant, Oklahoma, has issued a recall of approximately 11.8 million pounds of ready-to-eat (RTE) meat and poultry products due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). The recall affects products produced between May 31 and October 8, 2024, which were distributed to restaurants, schools, and institutions nationwide.

The contamination was identified during routine FSIS testing, which confirmed the presence of Listeria in finished RTE poultry products. Further investigation traced the source of contamination to BrucePac’s chicken products. Although there have been no reported cases of illness linked to the consumption of the recalled items, FSIS warns that Listeria can cause severe infections, particularly in vulnerable groups such as older adults, people with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, and gastrointestinal distress, and in extreme cases, the infection can lead to miscarriages or stillbirths.

FSIS is urging restaurants, schools, and other institutions to check their inventories and ensure that any affected products are discarded or returned. The agency will continue to post updates on its website as more information becomes available. Consumers with concerns or questions can contact BrucePac’s recall coordinator, Seth Leeper, for assistance by email to [email protected] or phone at 503-874-3000.
