History Comes to Life at Ormond Beach's Pilgrims Rest Cemetery

The Ormond Beach Historical Society, in partnership with Brenda and Steve Fecher, hosted the 16th annual tours of Pilgrims Rest Cemetery on October 4 and 5. This year’s event, expanded to two nights, offered visitors live reenactments of Ormond Beach's history. With all tours fully booked, proceeds went toward both the upkeep of the cemetery and the historical society.

Brenda Fecher, who, along with her husband, is the third generation of her family to care for the cemetery, has deep ties to many of the individuals buried there. Reenactors portrayed various historical figures, including Brenda’s ancestors and Confederate soldiers. The tours ended with the firing of a mountain howitzer, provided by the Sons of Confederate Veterans.

Brenda and Steve Fecher hope the event not only preserves the cemetery but also fosters a connection to local history, ensuring no one buried there is forgotten.

Florida Lawmakers Push for Permanent Daylight Saving Time, But Clocks Still Change in 2024

Daylight saving time will end in 2024 as scheduled, with clocks set to "fall back" at 2 a.m. EST on Sunday, November 2. Despite years of efforts by Florida lawmakers and others to adopt daylight saving time year-round, the proposals have not been fully approved. The Sunshine Protection Act, a federal bill, has passed the Senate but awaits further approval from the House of Representatives and the president.

Globally, most countries, including Japan, China, and India, do not observe daylight saving time. In the U.S., Arizona and Hawaii, along with territories like Puerto Rico, also opt out.

Several states have considered legislation this year to change their daylight saving time observance, but until federal action is taken, the time change will continue for most Americans.

Florida's Fall Colors: When and Where to See Seasonal Foliage

Florida may not be the first place people think of for fall foliage, but it offers its own version of seasonal beauty. Contrary to popular belief, the changing leaves are driven by shortening daylight rather than cooler temperatures. As days grow shorter, trees break down chlorophyll, revealing the vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows of fall.

Peak foliage in Florida occurs from late October through mid-November, with the northern regions showcasing the brightest colors. Torreya State Park in the Panhandle and Gainesville are popular destinations for leaf peeping, with trees like the Florida maple, sweetgum, and persimmon providing a colorful display. Even in Central Florida, Wekiwa State Park offers a glimpse of fall with its cypress and maple trees.

Though the season arrives later than in northern states, Florida’s fall foliage is worth the wait for those seeking a scenic autumn experience.

Flooded Ormond Beach Homeowners Await FEMA's Purchase Offer Amid Appraisal Dispute

Bruce and Lisa Chiarizzi of Ormond Beach are seeking help from FEMA to purchase their flood-prone home, which has been inundated four times in seven years. Despite repeated requests for assistance to elevate their home, FEMA denied the applications. Now, the agency is considering buying and demolishing the property as a flood mitigation measure. However, the Chiarizzis are concerned about the offered price—$246,469, close to the home’s assessed value on county tax rolls. Their independent appraiser values the home at $404,000, a difference of $157,000.

FEMA’s policy is to offer a fair market value based on certified appraisals, but the Chiarizzis fear the lower valuation may be used to expedite the sale. With the decision potentially taking up to 18 months, the couple remains in limbo, facing another hurricane season while they wait for final approval and funding.
