Avalon Park Moves Forward Despite Environmental Criticism
Hometown Newa
The developer behind Avalon Park Daytona Beach, a large-scale residential and mixed-use project west of Interstate 95, has outlined road plans intended to alleviate traffic in the area. The plan includes extending Hand Avenue and Tomoka Farms Road, with Volusia County funding two key bridges. While the Daytona Beach City Commission and Volusia County Council have approved the agreements, opposition has surfaced over environmental concerns and taxpayer costs. Council Chair Jeff Brower voiced his reservations, particularly regarding the impact on wetlands. The developer countered that the proposed routes would minimize environmental damage, backed by a conservation plan. Construction will be phased over several years, with the first phase slated for 2025, ultimately including nearly 8,000 homes and extensive commercial space.

Debate Heats Up as Volusia County Mulls Charter Amendment on Growth Limits
The Volusia County Council is considering limiting urban growth into rural areas, possibly through a charter amendment in 2026. County Chair Jeff Brower supports the move, aiming to prevent sprawl, while the Volusia County Farm Bureau opposes it, fearing negative impacts on property values. Advocates argue that rural boundaries could help address flooding and development issues. The council is also discussing stricter environmental and development standards to manage growth. Further steps include mapping undeveloped areas and the potential appointment of a Charter Review Commission to review county laws. See More Here

Kangaroo on the Loose in Pierson: Here’s How to Handle an Encounter
Sheriff Chitwood’s Facebook Page
A loose kangaroo has been spotted in Pierson, Florida, sparking concerns about safety. While kangaroos are native to Australia, they can grow up to 7 feet tall and be dangerous if provoked, with sharp claws and powerful kicks. If you encounter the kangaroo, authorities advise backing away slowly, avoiding eye contact, and appearing smaller by keeping your arms close. If attacked, drop to the ground and remain still. The Volusia County Sheriff's Office is tracking the kangaroo and encourages residents to report any sightings.
Killer43 Years Later, Genetic Genealogy Identifies Victim of Notorious Serial Killer
Volusia County Sheriff
Pamela Kay Wittman, a victim of Daytona Beach-area serial killer Gerald Stano, has been identified 43 years after her death thanks to genetic genealogy, Volusia County officials announced. Wittman’s remains were discovered in 1980 near Interstate 95, but her identity had remained a mystery. FHD Forensics, with funding from the nonprofit Genealogy for Justice, confirmed her name, providing closure to her family. Wittman, who was 25 at the time, was one of many women killed by Stano, who was executed in 1998. A memorial marker has been placed at the site where her body was found.
