Volusia School Board Honors Custodial and Warehouse Teams for Behind-the-Scenes Work
Courtesy Volusia County Schools Facebook Page
At the Volusia County School Board meeting on Oct. 22, Custodial Services and Warehouse Operations were recognized for their efforts in keeping schools clean and operational. The district's in-house custodial program, launched in 2021, has improved school cleanliness following years of complaints and failed inspections. The custodial team earned high marks in recent evaluations, and School Board members, including Ruben Colon and Jaime Haynes, praised the move to bring custodians back in-house. Warehouse Operations was also commended for setting up new schools and managing large relocation projects. Superintendent Carmen Balgobin acknowledged the behind-the-scenes work both teams perform, highlighting their commitment to service.
Ormond Beach Planning Board to Weigh Amendments to Ormond Crossings Project
Courtesy City of Ormond Beach
The Ormond Beach Planning Board will review an amendment to the Ormond Crossings development plan on Tuesday, Oct. 29. The proposal seeks to modify a section intended for high-density housing to allow for single-family homes, while also updating the broader residential master plan. Once completed, the residential portion of Ormond Crossings could contain 2,500 homes.
Ormond Crossings, a nearly 3,000-acre development south of U.S. 1, has been in the works since 2002. It will feature a mix of residential, retail, and industrial spaces. In August, the city approved the first phase of the development, consisting of 444 homes, and the creation of the Ormond Crossings West Community Development District.
Holly Hill Faces Lingering Sewage Crisis in Wake of Hurricane Milton
Nearly two weeks after Hurricane Milton, some Holly Hill residents are still grappling with sewage issues, unable to flush toilets or take showers. Floodwaters have subsided, but raw sewage lingers in certain neighborhoods, causing a foul odor and sanitation concerns. Residents say these problems predate the storm and blame the city’s outdated sewage infrastructure for exacerbating the situation.
The city's public works team is addressing sewage issues while continuing long-term plans to upgrade the system. Holly Hill has been making yearly improvements, but progress has been slow due to budget constraints. Officials report that lift stations, essential to the system, were overwhelmed by floodwaters during the storm. Frustrated residents have called on the city to expedite repairs and upgrades to prevent future problems.
Falcon 9 Booster Flies for 18th Time as SpaceX Expands Starlink Network
SpaceX successfully launched a Falcon 9 rocket from Florida on Wednesday, delivering 23 Starlink satellites into low-Earth orbit. The rocket lifted off at 5:47 p.m. ET from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, marking another step in SpaceX’s efforts to expand its satellite internet network.
The mission featured the Falcon 9’s first-stage booster on its 18th flight, having previously supported several major missions. After stage separation, the first stage was expected to land on the drone ship "A Shortfall of Gravitas" in the Atlantic Ocean.
