Biketoberfest 2024 Sees 25 Motorcycle Crash Victims Treated at Halifax Health

During the 2024 Biketoberfest, Halifax Health treated 38 individuals with traumatic injuries, 25 of which were due to motorcycle crashes. The four-day event, which took place from October 17 to 20, saw Halifax Health, the area's only Level II Trauma Center, handle 22 trauma cases directly related to the festivities. Officials reported that no deaths occurred this year, and 10 of the motorcyclists involved in crashes were wearing helmets.
Although this year's number of admissions was slightly lower than last year's record of 39, the hospital praised the efforts of its emergency and trauma teams for managing the influx of patients. Biketoberfest, an annual event known for attracting thousands of motorcyclists, often strains local emergency services, and Halifax Health emphasized the importance of its role in the community during such high-pressure times.
Hurricane Milton Recovery Brings Warning of Fraud, Contractor Scams

In the aftermath of Hurricane Milton, Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody has cautioned residents to stay alert for disaster-related scams and price gouging. The hurricane, which hit Florida’s West Coast, left widespread damage, and scammers may attempt to exploit vulnerable residents during the recovery process. Moody’s office warns of potential fraud related to debris removal, contractor scams, and fake charity solicitations.
Floridians are advised to get multiple estimates for repairs, verify contractors' credentials, and avoid upfront payments. Additionally, officials warn against fraudulent solicitations for charitable donations and FEMA-related scams, emphasizing that legitimate disaster-relief agencies do not request personal information or fees.
Moody is urging residents to report any price gouging on storm essentials through the state’s official channels, with violators facing penalties of up to $25,000 for multiple offenses. Residents are encouraged to stay vigilant and utilize official resources for guidance and support.
Volusia County Schools Enhance Security Measures After Violent Threats Surge
The Volusia County School Board has updated its safety policy, mandating that all schools present their threat management plans to staff and students each year, as required by state law. This update comes after the board has made safety a top priority, particularly following a surge in violent student threats last month.
At a recent meeting, Capt. Todd Smith, the district’s director of safety and security, presented the Florida Safe Schools Assessment for the 2024-25 school year, which included ongoing efforts to enhance security. The district has completed or is finishing several upgrades, including installing door locks and cameras, and has bolstered its response to an increase in "swatting" incidents. These new measures have resulted in a decrease in weapons brought onto campuses and a significant reduction in threats.
