Ormond Beach's Alvin Sonny Plotkin recently celebrated his 100th birthday, an event that gathered family and the local community. A veteran of World War II, Plotkin’s service in the U.S. Navy earned him notable honors, including a Purple Heart and seven air medals. On October 13, relatives joined him for a memorable celebration in his garage, with the Ormond Beach Fire Department dropping by to mark the occasion. Inside, family members continued the celebration with food and cake, sharing what they described as one of Plotkin’s most joyful moments since his wife’s passing nine years ago. Originally from Richmond, Virginia, Plotkin has had an eventful life that included several stays in Las Vegas, Nevada, before settling in Florida in the 1970s. His century of life reflects both service and resilience, leaving a mark on family and community alike.

Amazon’s $394M Daytona Acquisition Sets Volusia County Record

Amazon has made headlines in Daytona Beach with its record-breaking acquisition of a 2.8 million-square-foot robotics fulfillment center, spending nearly $393.9 million in a transaction closed on October 24. Usually leasing its properties, Amazon’s direct ownership of the new facility underscores the company’s investment in expanding its distribution network in Volusia County. Developed by Hillwood Communities, this acquisition marks the county’s largest real estate deal, outpacing a previous $123 million transaction for The Falls, a 599 home residential community off Clyde Morris Boulevard in Ormond Beach in December 2020.

With two additional centers set to open by early 2025, Amazon aims to increase job opportunities and bolster local logistics, bringing potentially 2,000 new jobs to the region. Positioned strategically at I-4 and I-95, Volusia County provides Amazon with access to Central Florida’s growing customer base, reinforcing the company’s next-day and same-day delivery capabilities.

Nightly Aerial Mosquito Control Treatments to Begin Sunday Evening

Treatment Areas in Ormond Beach

Volusia County, in partnership with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS), will conduct fixed-wing, aerial mosquito treatments across the county to manage increased mosquito populations following Hurricane Milton. The treatments, anticipated to cover more than 330,000 acres, will begin after sunset on Sunday, Oct. 27, and will continue nightly until completed. Operations are scheduled between sunset and sunrise when mosquitoes are most active, with the goal of completing all treatments, weather permitting, by the end of the month.

The materials used in these operations will be industry-standard products widely applied across the United States to control mosquito populations. All products are registered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and FDACS and are applied by trained, state-licensed technicians. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, when used according to label instructions, larvicides and adulticides do not pose risks to people, pets, or the environment.

Residents can view an online map of planned treatment areas and learn more about Volusia County’s mosquito control efforts at www.volusia.org/mosquito.

What???!! Florida Biologists Find Burmese Pythons Capable of Consuming Large Deer

Photo-Conservancy of Southwest Florida/Facebook

A recent study by Southwest Florida biologists has revealed that Burmese pythons, a pervasive and powerful invasive species in the Everglades, can consume larger prey than previously believed. Measurements by the Conservancy of Southwest Florida found that these snakes’ jaw width is at least two inches wider than earlier estimates, enabling them to consume animals like deer and alligators. One python was observed ingesting a 77-pound white-tailed deer, almost two-thirds larger than the snake’s mass.

Experts highlight the impact of these apex predators on Everglades wildlife, noting declining populations of bobcats, deer, and raccoons. The Conservancy has removed over 770 adult pythons from South Florida and hopes these findings will help advance local control efforts. Since their first sighting in the Everglades in 1979, the Burmese python population has grown exponentially, with current estimates placing their numbers between 30,000 and 150,000.
