Florida Power & Light Seeks $1.2 Billion for Hurricane Restoration, Reserves

Photo: Florida Power & Light Website

Florida Power & Light (FPL) customers are poised to face higher bills in 2025, with the utility filing a request to recoup $1.2 billion for recent storm restoration efforts. This increase, aimed at covering costs from Hurricanes Milton, Debby, and Helene, would see residential bills rise for those using 1,000 kilowatt-hours monthly—up from $121.19 to $133.99 in traditional service areas and from $135.38 to $143.45 in Northwest Florida. The Public Service Commission’s approval is needed, though such requests are commonly granted. FPL has invested in storm resilience and recovery technologies to mitigate future outages. Its filing, supported by NextEra Energy, outlined restoration costs from Hurricane Milton alone at $811 million. Other utilities affected by these hurricanes, such as Duke Energy and Tampa Electric, are also expected to seek cost recovery. These costs mark the latest in a series of financial impacts for FPL customers following recent major storms.

Do you think FPL should be passing these expense through to customers?

Flooding Spurs Debate on Countywide Development Moratorium in Volusia County

Photo: Jeff Brower Website

Residents and officials in Volusia County are calling for action to address worsening flooding, but legal barriers complicate efforts to implement a countywide development moratorium. DeLand and Daytona Beach residents, whose properties have repeatedly flooded, are pushing for reform to address these persistent issues. Volusia County Council Chair Jeff Brower has proposed a moratorium, though he acknowledges it would require unanimous support from all 16 cities within the county. At a recent press conference, Brower’s proposal met resistance from Daytona Beach Commissioner Stacy Cantu, who raised concerns about his engagement with local officials. Brower, in turn, emphasized the need for public support to address residents’ concerns. Councilman Danny Robins noted the county’s recent initiatives to mitigate flooding but underscored the limits of county jurisdiction. As the November 19 council meeting approaches, officials remain divided on how best to balance development with environmental protections in the region.

(UPDATED) Operation Blue Roof Deadline Extended for Hurricane-Affected Florida Residents

Operation Blue Roof, a FEMA-funded program managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, is offering free roof tarping for Florida residents affected by Hurricane Milton, with an extended deadline now set for November 14. Available to homeowners in Flagler, Volusia, and other storm-hit counties, the program covers roof repairs for primary residences with specific eligibility requirements, including that roofs have less than 50% damage and use shingles or a similar material. Applicants must be either the homeowner or have legal permission to occupy the home.

The Corps reminds applicants that the program is free, and representatives will not ask for sensitive information or payments. Eligible residents can find more information or apply at blueroof.gov or by calling (888) 766-3258.

Sen. Scott Stresses Economy, Voter Turnout at Ormond Beach Event

U.S. Senator Rick Scott, campaigning on Florida’s East Coast, held a rally Tuesday in Ormond Beach, where he urged Republicans to turn out on Election Day. With his Democratic opponent, Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, focusing on youth outreach, Scott emphasized his economic message, contending that Democratic policies have driven inflation and made life costlier for young people. Citing increased expenses in healthcare, education, housing, and groceries, Scott suggested these rising costs limit young Americans’ financial independence.

Scott also commented on recent controversy over Puerto Rico-related remarks made by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe at a Trump rally. While calling it a “bad joke,” Scott noted that the Trump campaign had denounced the comments.
