With podcasting’s rising appeal, scammers have begun exploiting the trend, sending fake guest invites that promise high payouts. Posing as prominent personalities, these fraudsters lure victims with offers of up to $3,000 for an interview, cybersecurity experts warn. Typically, the scam begins with a “tech check” on platforms like Facebook, where scammers ask for login credentials or account changes. Once they gain access, they lock the account, seeking sensitive photos or personal details to use in extortion attempts. In some cases, linked financial data may also be at risk. Chris Hadnagy, CEO of Social Engineer, LLC, notes that these scams have become increasingly common, with many unsuspecting social media users falling prey. Experts suggest using tools like ListenNotes to verify podcast legitimacy and urge caution with any request for account modifications.
Ormond Beach Planning Board Favors Single-Family Units in Major Development
Image: City of Ormond Beach
The Ormond Beach Planning Board recommended approval of a zoning amendment for the extensive Ormond Crossings development, supporting single-family homes in lieu of multifamily units on portions of the 3,000-acre property south of U.S. 1. Board members emphasized the preference for single-family residences, highlighting that it aligns with community values without increasing housing density. Local residents voiced concerns that the development could intensify flooding in the area, citing historic issues with severe water pooling. In response, the developer’s representative confirmed plans for a detailed stormwater management strategy, which will undergo review by local and federal agencies. Beyond development-related impacts, some board members pointed to regional infrastructure challenges, suggesting state agencies share responsibility for flood mitigation. Approved changes include a revised master plan and Tymber Creek Road realignment. The city’s Site Plan Review Committee had previously approved a preliminary plan for 444 homes, marking the project’s first residential phase.
Flagler County Sailboat Grounding Leaves Vessel Damaged, Owner Unharmed
Photo: FWC
A sailboat ran aground near Sea Colony in Flagler County after a mechanical failure left the vessel reliant solely on sail power. The incident unfolded when the boat's motor malfunctioned, leaving the owner to navigate only by sails, which brought the vessel too close to shore. As the wind died down, the sailboat drifted with the current toward the coast. When the wind picked up again, the sailboat accelerated, pushing it dangerously close to the shore. The owner deployed the anchor in an attempt to stop the boat, but the vessel, caught in the surf, listed and sustained serious damage, including the loss of its mast. Authorities reported that the owner remained unharmed. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers arrived at the scene and safely transported the owner back to shore.

FPL RATE INCREASE POLL RESULTS
“I can hardly afford to pay the bills I already have, so how am I supposed to pay even more for something that wasn't even my FAULT. Talk to the Governor and see if he can get some of that Federal money that the Democrats keep giving the illegal immigrants and give it to the actual citizens of the United States. After all, we paid those taxes to begin with.”
“The costs should be borne by both the customers and the shareholders. Why? If the shareholder does his/her due diligence the first hint is the name ‘Florida’ in FPL.”
“I think there should be some recovery but it would depend on what it was going to be used for. Reserves for next hurricane? Or to build solar something or others.”
“They will have insurance and reserves to utilize for such events. We have our own unexpected repair costs to pay for.”
“We need to build better infrastructure to mitigate the damage, especially since we are getting bigger storms.”
“This is a shared responsibility I believe, FP&L Should have some reserves for this type of event as they are common, but customers should also expect to share the burden as they should also know these events happen and reserves may not cover everything and the reserves need to be rebuilt after use.”
“We pay more than enough. Instead of outrageous salaries they should establish a reserve.”
“I agree with the concept of spreading extraordinary and unusual costs among all subscribers, but I need to know more about the financial numbers and business procedures of the utility.”
“It’s Florida. They know these storms are going to affect power. Even smaller storms throughout the year knock out power. They should be able to figure a way to minimize these problems by this point.”
“Recoup the cost if it means that they invest in preventative efforts for next time. We shouldn't be paying over and over again to fix things just good enough till the next hurricane destroys them again. Invest in making them not happen again.”
Laser Headset Offers New Way to Assess Stroke Risk by Measuring Brain Blood Flow
Photo: California Academy of Sciences
A new laser-based headset developed by researchers at Caltech and USC could revolutionize stroke risk assessment. The device measures changes in blood flow and volume within the brain by using an infrared laser to detect how blood vessels respond when under stress, such as during breath-holding. Recent tests with the device demonstrated that high-risk participants exhibited faster but less voluminous blood flow, indicating stiff blood vessels that increase stroke risk. This technology marks the first time blood vessel responsiveness can be measured noninvasively. It allows physicians to assess stroke risk in real-time and may also support future screenings for other neurological diseases. Now undergoing further testing, the headset is expected to reach clinical trials soon, with plans to incorporate machine learning to refine its predictions. This tool promises to transform stroke screening, offering a critical step forward in identifying individuals at elevated stroke risk
