Beloved Ormond Beach Couple Remembered After Hurricane Milton Tragedy

In the close-knit community of Ormond Beach, Jim and Karen Zahnen are remembered by friends and neighbors for their warmth, generosity, and zest for life. Tragically, they became victims of Hurricane Milton, leaving a void felt by many who cherished their friendship. Jim, 80, and Karen, nearly 80, were together for over five decades, a bond that friends say made them inseparable. Karen passed away during the hurricane when a tree fell on their home, and Jim succumbed to his injuries on October 17.

The Zahnens, long-time residents of Tomoka Oaks, welcomed friends and strangers alike, often hosting casual Friday gatherings in their driveway that drew neighbors and friends. Karen, who had a 25-year career with Bethune-Cookman University’s athletic department, was known for her dedication to her work, while Jim’s contributions to local education extended to helping develop Daytona State College’s Advanced Technology College.

Ormond Beach City Commissioner Harold Briley, who had been friends with the Zahnens for decades, described them as humble, caring people always ready to lend a hand, whether it was assisting a friend or celebrating life’s moments with loved ones. Jim’s and Karen’s memory is now honored through a scholarship fund established by Daytona State College in their names, supporting aspiring students at the college.

A memorial service for Jim and Karen Zahnen will be held on November 16 at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, followed by a celebration of life. The community continues to grieve the loss of two souls who, as friends recount, were "friends to everybody."

Brower, Chitwood Face Off in Verbal Sparring as Voters Prepare to Decide

Jeff Brower-Mike Chitwood Campaigns

Volusia County Council Chair Jeff Brower and Sheriff Mike Chitwood’s sharp exchange sets a combative tone ahead of Tuesday's general election, where both officials are seeking re-election. Brower criticized Chitwood as a “bully” due to the sheriff’s outspoken approach, which includes public shaming of minors accused of school threats. Chitwood shot back on social media, branding Brower as “feckless” and “inept” and claiming Brower’s endorsed opponent, James Powers, as his “running mate,” sharing a mugshot of Powers in a pointed jab. Brower later questioned whether he and his family would receive unbiased law enforcement protection, suggesting concerns over potential differential treatment from the sheriff’s office. The two officials, who must work together if re-elected, face a divided electorate as Brower runs against Randy Dye and Chitwood against Powers in a high-stakes election for Volusia County’s leadership.

Volusia County to Provide Free Rides for Voters on Election Day

Volusia County will offer free transportation on Election Day to registered voters using its Votran transit system. To take advantage, riders need only bring a Volusia County voter ID, though polling places without existing Votran stops will require additional planning. Votran’s Gold Service, available to disabled residents, provides direct trips to polling sites, and rides can be scheduled up to November 4 at noon. Residents of select areas, including DeBary, DeLand, Deltona, and Orange City, can use VoRide’s rideshare service for free by entering a promo code shared the Monday before Election Day. All riders must show voter ID to skip the fare. Gold users wishing to schedule a ride should call 386-322-5100 by Monday November 4th at noon.

Preregistration for Disaster Food Aid Opens to Volusia County Residents Nov. 11

Volusia County residents impacted by Hurricane Milton can preregister for the Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (D-SNAP) beginning Monday, Nov. 11. This emergency program from the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) offers food assistance to those affected by the storm who are not already receiving SNAP benefits.

Preregistration runs online from Nov. 11 to Nov. 15, and applicants must also complete a phone interview later that week. To qualify, applicants must meet certain criteria, including residence in Volusia County during the hurricane, proof of disaster-related losses, and adherence to income guidelines. Approved residents will receive an EBT card for food purchases, though restrictions apply.

For detailed information on D-SNAP, including eligibility, required documentation, and interview scheduling, visit www.myflfamilies.com/dsnap.
