UPDATED STORY: Solo Sailor’s Boat Runs Aground on Flagler County Beach, Wreckage Raises Concerns

Photo: Daytona News-Journal

A solo sailor’s voyage along Florida’s coast turned catastrophic when his boat, Seven Oceans, ran aground near Flagler County. Sailing alone, Vance Mason was forced ashore after his boat’s rigging malfunctioned and winds died down. While rescuers assisted him to safety, the sailboat now lies in pieces on the beach, with wreckage scattered in the sand. Concerned residents in Sea Colony gathered debris to prevent it from drifting into the ocean, though the removal of the wreck poses a significant financial challenge for Mason. His insurance covers only $5,000 of the estimated $12,000 cleanup cost. Mason, who had been en-route to New Orleans on a longer voyage back to Oklahoma, faces the daunting task of securing funds and salvaging what’s left of his personal belongings from the wrecked vessel.

Holly Hill Officials Address Stormwater Woes Following Hurricane Milton Flooding

In Holly Hill, city officials are mobilizing efforts to confront the city’s stormwater challenges in the wake of Hurricane Milton, which left numerous homes flooded. A workshop held by local leaders highlighted issues in the city’s drainage and swale systems, with officials promising several projects to address both flooding and sewage backups. A vulnerability study, set to finish in December, aims to identify primary risks and secure grants for upgrades, including a $4.5 million stormwater pipe lining initiative. Despite the city’s commitment, residents like Danielle Latona, whose home has flooded repeatedly, remain concerned about future flooding. The city is also contemplating FEMA buyouts of frequently flooded homes to establish retention ponds. With $1.47 million allocated for stormwater this year and an additional $1.6 million next year, Holly Hill aims to improve its infrastructure and respond more effectively to rising water levels and population demands.

Volusia County to Provide Free Rides for Voters on Election Day

Volusia County will offer free transportation on Election Day to registered voters using its Votran transit system. To take advantage, riders need only bring a Volusia County voter ID, though polling places without existing Votran stops will require additional planning. Votran’s Gold Service, available to disabled residents, provides direct trips to polling sites, and rides can be scheduled up to November 4 at noon. Residents of select areas, including DeBary, DeLand, Deltona, and Orange City, can use VoRide’s rideshare service for free by entering a promo code shared the Monday before Election Day. All riders must show voter ID to skip the fare. Gold users wishing to schedule a ride should call 386-322-5100 by Monday November 4th at noon.
