Ormond Beach Mayor Celebrates UF Surgeon’s Lifesaving Contributions with Key to the City

Ormond Beach Mayor Bill Partington, joined by his wife Lori and Deputy Mayor Harold Briley, recognized Dr. Tomas Martin on October 31 for his contributions to heart surgery. Dr. Martin, a renowned heart surgeon and director of the UF Health Aortic Disease Center, received a mayoral proclamation and a key to the city. Both Lori Partington and Briley were former patients, having undergone major heart surgeries under Dr. Martin’s care. Known for pioneering the “Florida Sleeve” procedure for Marfan syndrome patients, Dr. Martin’s work has achieved high survival rates and eliminated the need for reoperations up to eight years post-surgery. In addition to his work in Florida, he has provided critical heart care in underserved regions around the globe. The proclamation celebrated Dr. Martin’s dedication, stating that Ormond Beach is “grateful for his contributions” in extending lives and supporting global communities.
Hands-On Learning: Seabreeze High’s CTE Programs Highlight Workforce Readiness
Seabreeze High School recently hosted district officials for a Career and Technical Education (CTE) tour, where students presented their skills in fields like health science, digital media, culinary arts, and agritechnology. These programs offer hands-on experiences, professional certifications, and crucial skills such as teamwork and communication. Senior Mackenzie Nichols shared how her health training helped her perform CPR in a real emergency, while fellow student Luca Kaney Olivari emphasized how the program’s real-world training supports his work in healthcare. Other students highlighted their achievements in digital media and agricultural studies, which prepare them for diverse career paths. During the event, culinary students served a lunch featuring gourmet dishes, showcasing their practical skills. According to district sources, Seabreeze’s CTE programs also support local business partnerships, enabling students to enter the workforce or pursue further education with confidence and expertise.
Operation Green Light: Volusia County Honors Veterans with Weeklong Green Light Display
Photo: National Association of Counties
Volusia County is joining Operation Green Light for Veterans, illuminating several county buildings with green lights from November 4 to November 11 as a tribute to military veterans. The initiative, widely observed across the nation and in Florida, aims to show veterans that they are valued and supported. The Ocean Center Convention Center in Daytona Beach, along with the Historic Volusia County Courthouse and the Thomas C. Kelly Administration Center in DeLand, will be decorated in green. Veterans Services Director Bob Watson expressed that this week is an opportunity to honor the sacrifices of veterans, urging residents and businesses to participate by displaying green lights as well. The county also encourages veterans to contact Veterans Services for assistance in accessing their benefits, either by calling (386) 740-5102, visiting volusia.org/veterans, or going to the offices in DeLand, New Smyrna Beach, Daytona Beach, or Deltona.
