Ormond Beach Debris Cleanup Advances; City Officials Address Flooding Issues
Ormond Beach is progressing in its post-Hurricane Milton debris collection, having cleared around one-third of the expected 150,000 cubic yards of waste. CrowderGulf Disaster Recovery teams, on the ground shortly after the storm, continue to operate daily to expedite cleanup. Heavy rains—23 inches in 18 hours—led to substantial flooding, especially around Central Park and Ormond Beach Middle School. Despite improvements since previous storms, certain areas, such as Durrance Acres, still experience flooding that hinders emergency access, prompting resident appeals for action.
City commissioners have proposed a workshop to review stormwater management and sewer systems, with a focus on infrastructure improvements to mitigate future risks. Commissioner Lori Tolland highlighted the urgency, pointing to recent storm-induced sewage issues. The city aims to advance its flood and sewage response measures through strategic state and federal support.
Ormond Beach Veterans Celebration Honors Service and Resilience

Ormond Beach’s annual Veterans Day celebration held November 7, brought together veterans to recognize their contributions and sacrifices. Held at the city’s Senior Center, the event featured retired U.S. Marine Corps Chief Warrant Officer Pierre Louis as the keynote speaker. Louis paid tribute to veterans’ resilience, calling them “solution experts” for their role in leading during challenging times. His message reached beyond traditional honors, as he highlighted veterans facing homelessness, post-traumatic stress, or incarceration, reflecting his dedication as a mentor at Tomoka Correctional Institution.
The event, underscored by live music from The Blue Notes band, also included a city proclamation by Deputy Mayor Harold Briley. Louis concluded with a message of unity, stating that regardless of their service branch, he saw the same commitment to the nation in “red, white, and blue.”
Flagler, Volusia Counties Strengthen GOP Support in 2024 Election
In the 2024 election, Flagler and Volusia counties moved further toward the GOP, showing strong support for Republican nominee Donald Trump. Flagler County saw Trump secure 59.90% of the vote, the highest level of Republican support since 1988, nearly surpassing the 60% mark. Volusia County followed suit with 56.42% backing Trump, also marking a historical high since the ’88 election.
Democratic candidate Kamala Harris slightly increased the Democratic share in both counties over 2020’s figures, primarily pulling votes from third-party voters rather than Trump supporters. Notably, write-ins were the third most popular option in both counties, underscoring the decline in third-party voting.
Since Barack Obama’s 2008 victory, neither county has swung Democratic, with both now firmly leaning Republican in recent cycles. This year’s election reinforces a steady trend that has seen both counties turn solidly red in presidential contests.
