Ormond Ballet’s High School Seniors Shine in The Nutcracker
Ormond Ballet’s upcoming production of The Nutcracker will spotlight three high school seniors, Eris Potts, Mira Khanna, and Baylee Rogan, each performing soloist roles. Potts, a Seabreeze High School senior, takes on the Sugar Plum Fairy, a role she has aspired to for years. Khanna, from Father Lopez Catholic High School, will portray the Snow Queen, while Rogan, a Flagler Palm Coast High School senior, debuts as the Dew Drop Fairy. Artistic Director Michelle Boutros commends their dedication and leadership, noting their discipline both on stage and academically. The dancers, who rehearse almost daily, view the experience as a team effort, bonding through their shared challenges and accomplishments. Scheduled for November 23 and 24 at Daytona Beach’s News-Journal Center, the production offers the community a festive start to the holiday season. Tickets are available starting at $30 on the Ormond Ballet website.
Avelo Expands Daytona Beach Flights with New Route to Hartford

Avelo Airlines has added a new nonstop route from Daytona Beach International Airport to Hartford, Connecticut, expanding its Daytona service, which began in June 2023. The twice-weekly route, flying on Fridays and Mondays, marks Avelo’s second destination in Connecticut from Daytona, alongside a flight to New Haven. This addition brings Avelo’s total routes out of Daytona to three, including a seasonal service to Wilmington, DE/Philadelphia. Avelo also operates year-round flights to these destinations from Orlando International Airport, plus a route to Wilmington, North Carolina. Known for its low-cost, no-frills flights, Avelo is part of a growing sector of ultra-low-cost airlines, which also includes competitors like Spirit and Frontier. Starting in February, Daytona Beach International will also see new service from Breeze Airways, another ultra-low-cost airline, which plans to launch a direct route to White Plains, New York.
REAL ID Deadline Looms: What You Need to Fly Domestically in the U.S.
REAL ID compliance will be required by May 7, 2025, for travelers over 18 boarding domestic flights in the U.S. A REAL ID, easily recognized by a gold star on state-issued IDs, is necessary to clear TSA checkpoints without a passport. In Florida, those who renewed or received a license after January 2010 are already compliant. The REAL ID Act, enacted in response to 9/11, establishes uniform standards for IDs and has applied to federal facility access since 2015. To obtain a REAL ID, residents need to present original documents for identity, residency, Social Security, and birthdate verification at a service center. Those without a compliant ID should plan ahead, as May 2025 is fast approaching.

Welcome Uncommon Grain!
Uncommon Grain, a new bakery and café, has opened at 11 W. Granada Blvd. in downtown Ormond Beach. The bakery will offer a variety of fresh breads, pastries, artisan sandwiches, and eventually smoothies. Founded by Sergio Faenza and Brandon Sheppard, who also own nearby restaurant 63 Sovereign, Uncommon Grain aims to enhance local food options and revitalize a space that has been vacant since Cakery Creations closed. The bakery’s design features an open, light-filled atmosphere and includes a mural depicting historic downtown scenes from the early 1900s.
Operating hours are from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Saturday, with Sundays off. Faenza and Sheppard hope to provide unique breads and ethnic-inspired dishes, creating a welcoming spot for daily visitors and locals alike. Visit the Uncommon Grain website at TheUncommonGrain.com
