Carl and Susan Persis Recognized for Decades of Service to Volusia County and Ormond Beach

Photos: Carl Peris & Susan Persis - Respective Facebook Pages

At their final meeting, the Volusia County School Board honored Carl Persis for his eight years representing District 4. Persis, a former principal and lifelong advocate for education, described his board service as an extension of his commitment to helping children succeed. Despite a recent election loss, he pledged ongoing support for the district, receiving heartfelt recognition from Superintendent Carmen Balgobin for his lasting contributions.

Simultaneously, the Ormond Beach City Commission celebrated Susan Persis, Carl’s wife, for her six years as commissioner. Formerly a teacher and principal, she served the city in various roles, including deputy mayor, and recently ran for mayor. Though not re-elected, Susan expressed pride in her service and commitment to Ormond Beach’s future. Her colleagues honored her with a plaque and other tokens of appreciation, underscoring her dedication to the community.

More than a month after Hurricane Milton, Central Florida residents, especially in flood-prone areas, are still recovering. In New Smyrna Beach's Ellison Acres, Ryann Thacker’s home has flooded repeatedly, with severe damage from both Hurricanes Ian and Milton. Fortunately, she’s one of 45 homeowners receiving assistance from Volusia County’s Transform386, a recovery program established to help residents affected by Hurricane Ian. Through this program, Thacker will soon have a new home raised 10 feet to mitigate future flooding risks, while she temporarily relocates to nearby family. She continues to run her in-home daycare, crediting her resilience to her faith. With the construction phase extending to another 50 homes by year-end, Transform386 is still accepting applications. Affected residents can apply at Transform386.org, encouraged to seek aid without delay.

Daytona Beach International Airport now hosts two ultra low-cost airlines, Avelo and Breeze, offering budget-friendly flights with fees for additional services. Avelo, based in Houston, provides direct flights from Daytona to Wilmington, Delaware, and New Haven, Connecticut, with fees for extras like carry-on bags, seat selection, and in-flight Wi-Fi. Breeze Airways, founded by JetBlue's co-founder, launches its Daytona service this Thursday, offering flights to White Plains, New York, with future routes to Hartford, Raleigh-Durham, and Providence beginning in 2025. Breeze’s pricing includes a tiered structure, allowing passengers to select more inclusive packages that cover checked bags, snacks, and Wi-Fi. A ribbon-cutting for Breeze’s first Daytona flight will take place Thursday at 3 p.m., welcoming a new era of affordable air travel in Daytona. Visit aveloair.com and flybreeze.com for details.

Welcome Uncommon Grain!

Uncommon Grain, a new bakery and café, has opened at 11 W. Granada Blvd. in downtown Ormond Beach. The bakery will offer a variety of fresh breads, pastries, artisan sandwiches, and eventually smoothies. Founded by Sergio Faenza and Brandon Sheppard, who also own nearby restaurant 63 Sovereign, Uncommon Grain aims to enhance local food options and revitalize a space that has been vacant since Cakery Creations closed. The bakery’s design features an open, light-filled atmosphere and includes a mural depicting historic downtown scenes from the early 1900s.

Operating hours are from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Saturday, with Sundays off. Faenza and Sheppard hope to provide unique breads and ethnic-inspired dishes, creating a welcoming spot for daily visitors and locals alike. Visit the Uncommon Grain website at TheUncommonGrain.com
