Volusia County hosts December ParkVolusia registration events at public libraries
Starting Jan. 1, 2025, there will be a fee to park in county-owned and operated off-beach lot. Residents can continue to park for free if they register with ParkVolusia.
Volusia County will host additional in-person ParkVolusia registration events in December to help residents sign up for their complimentary beach driving and off-beach parking passes. Since Oct. 1, registered Volusia County residents have enjoyed no-fee vehicular access to the beach. To date, more than 24,000 residents have registered for the ParkVolusia program.
Starting Jan. 1, 2025, there will be a fee to park in county-owned and operated off-beach lots; however, residents registered with the ParkVolusia program will be exempt from these charges. The locations of these lots may be found in the “Beach Parking” tab at www.parkvolusia.org. Residents registered with the program are still subject to applicable fees at off-beach parking lots owned and operated by city governments.
The in-person registration events will take place from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. on the following dates and locations:
Monday, Dec. 9 – Ormond Beach Regional Library, 30 S. Beach St.
Wednesday, Dec. 11 – Daytona Beach Regional Library, 105 Jackie Robinson Parkway
Residents need to present a valid ID and vehicle registration. If these documents do not reflect a Volusia County address, residents must provide a lease agreement or property tax bill linking their name to an address in the county.
Residents may also register online at www.parkvolusia.org, through the Volusia Beaches app, or in person at the ParkVolusia office at 2422 S. Atlantic Ave., Daytona Beach Shores. The office is open from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Florida Sues FEMA, Alleges Political Bias in Hurricane Relief
Florida has sued FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell and former agency employee Marni Washington, alleging political discrimination in the aftermath of Hurricane Milton. The lawsuit claims FEMA relief workers skipped homes displaying Trump signs, with at least 20 such instances reported in Lake Placid. Text messages obtained by The Daily Wire allegedly directed workers to avoid homes with Trump support, sparking controversy.
Washington, who has been fired, denies wrongdoing and insists she was following orders from her superiors. FEMA’s Criswell labeled the behavior "reprehensible" but maintained it was an isolated incident. Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody is demanding a jury trial and damages, while Governor Ron DeSantis announced a separate state investigation.
The scandal highlights concerns about the politicization of disaster relief, with Moody emphasizing the need for equitable treatment of storm victims regardless of political affiliation. FEMA remains under scrutiny as hurricane season continues.

Touchscreens Lose Their Shine as Drivers Demand Buttons**

After years of replacing traditional buttons with sleek touchscreens, some automakers are reconsidering their approach. Hyundai, Porsche, and Volkswagen are reintroducing physical controls in response to growing driver frustration with touchscreen-based systems. Hyundai, in particular, cited focus group feedback indicating that touchscreens can be stressful and overly complex, especially for basic tasks like climate control.
While touchscreens initially promised streamlined design and greater customization, studies suggest they pose safety risks, with drivers often distracted for up to 40 seconds while navigating menus. Surveys also reveal declining consumer satisfaction with overly complicated infotainment systems.
European regulators have started rewarding cars with physical controls, acknowledging their safety benefits. Despite this trend, many automakers, including Tesla and Mercedes-Benz, remain committed to expansive touchscreen systems. As tactile controls stage a quiet comeback, the industry appears divided on whether physical buttons are a relic of the past or an enduring necessity.
