Ormond Beach will unveil the Seward Johnson sculpture tour on November 22, bringing 13 bronze statues to its downtown district as part of the “Art Imitates Life” exhibition. Organized by the Ormond Beach Arts District, the project raised over $50,000 through local sponsorships to make the display possible. The collection, on view through April 2025, includes pieces from Johnson’s celebrated series “Celebrating the Familiar,” featuring everyday scenes, and “Icons Revisited,” showcasing cultural landmarks like Rosie the Riveter and the iconic V-J Day kiss.

The exhibit also includes a unique depiction of artist Claude Monet painting a landscape, placed at Rockefeller Gardens to highlight the city’s scenic charm. The sculptures are spread along Granada Boulevard from A1A to Lewis Street, offering residents and visitors an immersive cultural experience. Maps of the installations are available online, ensuring easy navigation of this vibrant addition to Ormond Beach’s art scene.

Oldies & Goodies..Peabody Auditorium Hosts Rock Icons Styx in January

City of Daytona Beach

Styx, the iconic rock band that emerged from Chicago in the 1970s, will bring their legendary sound to Daytona Beach’s Peabody Auditorium on January 8, 2025. With over 50 years in the music industry, Styx continues to captivate audiences with their timeless classics and modern creations.

The band’s debut album launched in 1972, sparking a prolific career that spans 17 albums, including the recent Crash of the Crown in 2021. Hits like Come Sail Away, Renegade, and the chart-topping ballad Babe have made an indelible mark on classic rock history and pop culture alike, appearing in films, TV shows, and beyond.

The concert, starting at 7:30 p.m., offers fans a chance to relive rock history. Tickets, available through Ticketmaster, start at $49. For longtime devotees and new listeners, the night promises a celebration of Styx’s storied legacy and dynamic live performance.

Florida Lawmakers Delay Action on Condo Crisis Until 2024

Champlain Towers Collapse

Florida lawmakers have declined to hold a special session to address the affordability crisis gripping condo owners, choosing instead to address the issue in early 2024 during committee weeks ahead of the regular legislative session in March. This decision counters Governor Ron DeSantis’s call for immediate action.

The crisis stems from reforms passed after the 2021 collapse of Champlain Towers South, which required stricter safety standards and mandated condo associations to increase reserves for maintenance. These changes have resulted in sharp fee increases, forcing many condo owners to sell.

New Senate President Ben Albritton and House Speaker Daniel Perez cited the complexity of the issue, assuring that it will be a legislative priority. In the meantime, Sen. Jason Pizzo plans to co-host a summit on December 3 in Davie to gather stakeholders and propose solutions. Despite looming deadlines, lawmakers signaled flexibility for those acting in good faith toward compliance.

Vigil Held for Waylon Childs Following Tragic Drowning Incident

The Ormond Beach community held a vigil on Monday to honor 4-year-old Waylon Childs, who drowned after disappearing from a local park. Waylon was at the park with his father and two siblings when he went missing; his body was later found by the Volusia County Dive Team in a nearby body of water. Described as a "happy-go-lucky, spunky boy," Waylon's joyful presence is deeply missed. In response to this tragedy, the Childs family plans to advocate for legislation requiring child-proof fencing around playgrounds near water to prevent future incidents. The community's support highlights a shared commitment to child safety in public spaces.
