Flagler School Board Grants Final Extension to Hunter’s Ridge Developer

The Flagler County School Board granted a second extension to U.S. Capital Alliance LLC, giving the Hunter’s Ridge developer until December 15 to pay $1.34 million plus $69,000 in interest, fulfilling a $3 million agreement reached in 2022. The agreement includes $2 million in impact fee credits and $1 million paid as a donation, in return for the district’s consent to terminate plans for a 45-acre school site in south Flagler County.

The developer has paid $1.16 million to date, but delays in completing the remaining payments have frustrated board members, one of whom warned there would be no further extensions. Failure to meet the deadline could prompt the district to request that Flagler County halt permits and approvals for the Hunter’s Ridge project. The developer, however, remains confident about meeting the new deadline.

Demand Overwhelms Florida Condo Hurricane Grant Program After Six Days

The My Safe Florida Condo program, designed to help condo associations protect against hurricane damage, exhausted its $30 million budget within six days of launching, receiving applications from more than 800 associations—five times the number it could fund. Grants of up to $175,000, matching $2 for every $1 spent, were intended to encourage hurricane hardening of common condo property. However, only about 157 associations will benefit this year.

The program’s closure underscores the intense demand for financial assistance as condo associations grapple with both hurricane readiness and costly safety mandates enacted after the 2021 Surfside collapse. Many leaders, like those in West Palm Beach and North Palm Beach, expressed disappointment at missing the narrow application window.

Officials have encouraged associations to stay engaged for potential future funding. Meanwhile, the program’s overwhelming popularity highlights Florida’s broader challenges in addressing storm preparedness and affordability in its coastal communities., the night promises a celebration of Styx’s storied legacy and dynamic live performance.

Holiday Breaks Announced for Volusia, Flagler Students in 2024-25

Students in Volusia and Flagler counties can look forward to upcoming breaks for Thanksgiving and winter holidays. Thanksgiving break runs from November 25–29 in both districts, with classes resuming on December 2. Winter break follows from December 23 to January 3, with students returning to school on January 7 after a teacher duty day on January 6.

The 2024-25 school calendars include additional holidays, such as Martin Luther King Jr. Day (January 20), Presidents' Day (February 17), and a teacher workday on March 14. Spring break is scheduled for March 17–21, and Memorial Day falls on May 26. The academic year concludes on May 28 for Volusia students and May 29 for Flagler students, with teachers finishing on May 30.

These coordinated schedules ensure consistency for families in both counties as they prepare for a festive and restful holiday season.

Tiki Docks Port Orange: A Fresh Start for Volusia’s Largest Restaurant

Volusia County’s largest restaurant, located at the Riverwalk Marina in Port Orange, will reopen on Nov. 25 under a new name and management. Formerly Fysh Bar & Grill, the 18,000-square-foot space has been transformed into Tiki Docks Port Orange, a surf-themed eatery operated by Tampa-based 23 Restaurant Services.

Tiki Docks promises a more focused dining experience, reducing seating capacity from 600 to just over 300 to ensure higher service quality. The revamped interior embraces a tiki and surf aesthetic, complementing the restaurant's waterfront views. The menu features Florida-inspired fare, including grouper tacos, lobster rolls, and bourbon-glazed salmon, alongside tropical cocktails like the "1950s Zombie" and "Rum Runner Punch." Prices for entrees range from $14.99 to $34.99, with several budget-friendly options.

The restaurant has hired 160 employees, including some who worked at Fysh before it closed abruptly in April. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is set for 10:45 a.m. on opening day, with the restaurant officially opening at 11 a.m.
