Ormond Beach Chemist Transforms Skincare with Beeswax-Infused Fabrics

Ormond Beach’s Andrew Bernett turned personal necessity into innovation, founding Bee Well Therapeutics in 2023 after creating beeswax-infused gloves to ease his wife’s eczema. A former jet engine assembly worker with a chemistry background, Bernett discovered the healing potential of beeswax, a breathable material rich in fatty acids, to enhance topical treatments for skin conditions like dermatitis and psoriasis.
After seeing his invention cut healing times dramatically, Bernett expanded the concept into a product line that includes gloves, socks, and baby suits. The business has since sold over 1,200 items, with collaborations with dermatologists and clinics fueling its growth. The company also explores applications for radiation patients and plans clinical trials to validate its products.
Bernett’s innovative fabric has not only improved skin health but also redefined how topical treatments are delivered, highlighting the power of creative problem-solving in addressing medical needs.
Dr. Ladapo Urges End to Water Fluoridation, Sparking Controversy
Florida Surgeon General Dr. Joseph Ladapo has called on local governments to stop fluoridating public water systems, labeling the practice "public health malpractice." Backed by the Florida Department of Health, Dr. Ladapo cited studies linking high fluoride exposure to neurological effects, including lower IQs in children. This contrasts sharply with the CDC and major health organizations, which hail fluoridation as a crucial tool in reducing tooth decay.
Critics of Dr. Ladapo’s stance argue that the studies he references were conducted in countries with fluoride levels exceeding U.S. standards. Supporters counter that modern dental products provide sufficient fluoride without systemic dosing, advocating for dietary changes and better dental care access instead.
Several Florida municipalities, including Winter Haven and Naples, are reevaluating fluoridation, a move experts warn could harm low-income families. Despite the controversy, Dr. Ladapo’s call has reignited debates about fluoridation’s safety and necessity.

Kelli Chehaitli, a gifted teacher at Tomoka Elementary, is a finalist for Volusia County Schools’ 2026 Teacher of the Year award. She is one of five educators selected for the honor by a committee of parents, community members, teachers, and administrators. Other finalists include Katie Evans from Citrus Grove Elementary, Melissa Tse from Creekside Middle School, Shilpa Sharma from Galaxy Middle School, and Jeremy Davies from Spruce Creek High School.
The finalists were recognized for their outstanding contributions to student achievement and their ability to inspire excellence in education. Superintendent Dr. Carmen Balgobin praised their dedication, stating they exemplify the qualities of exceptional educators.
The winner will be announced on January 11, 2025, during a banquet hosted by the FUTURES Foundation for Volusia County Schools at the Hilton Daytona Beach Oceanfront Resort. AdventHealth is sponsoring the event, which celebrates the district's most impactful teachers.
